As most others have alluded to - the primary difference is where you find the product in the store!
The soy milk on the shelves is packed in asceptic packaging - which is an anaroebic environment. If you've forgotten your early science days - this is a package without oxygen and thus, no opportunity for bacteria to develop.
Most of the soy/rice/oat milks are packaged this way (including the ones in the dairy section) to assist in storage costs for the manufacturers, not having to refrigerate product after production, during transportation and in the retail setting drastically reduces costs. For consumers, this is a great way to stock up on your favorite product when it's on sale as you don't have to refrigerate it either! Just make sure to check the 'good until' date before you buy a years supply.
We used to buy milk that was packaged this way by the caseload when I lived in Alaska because the plane only came once a month!

Nothing, really. The packages are the same...the ones on the shelf tend to be smaller. You do have to refrigerate them after opening, whereas the ones in the refrigerated section are already chilled and must remain that way.
I guess it just depends on your lifestyle and what works best for you. If you are an occassional soy milk drinker, you might be more apt to keep a couple on the shelf and use the small container within a day or so...then the next time you need some, just grab it off your shelf. If you drink it every day, then that's not practical for you.

I don't think there is any difference. The packaging of the non refrigerated milk keeps it longer as they remove all the air from the package. I think the refrigerated packages are done to compete with cow milk and attempt to lure people from cow milk.
Tastes the same to me.

The difference is probably due to the convenience factor, since you don't have to refrigerate the boxed ones until you open them.
However, I find Silk Vanilla boxed is less sweet than the refrigerated one.
