Asian desserts are usually an acquired taste, most people are unfamiliar with both the taste & textures.
Most Asian restaurants have exotic ice creams beyond vanilla that are delicious and wirth trying: such as green tea ice cream, lychee, rambutan, papaya, red bean & even durian (if you are lucky!).
It actually depends where you live, if your local restaurants dont sell much dessert, they may opt to offer what sells locally.
You should ask the waiters to see if they can offer you something more than plain old vanilla. If you live in a big city, try the restaurants in your local Chinatown.

There are many, each country in Asia has a couple specialties but the ingredients can be hard to come by in the US. Rice flour is a major ingredient as well as seasonal fruits. Here are some: Popinsu (korean) Halo halo (Philippines) forgot the Malaysian term. Crushed ice with a spoonful of canned and sweetened mongo beans/red beans/ black beans/ boiled cooking banana/ jackfruit/palm fruit/jelly, a scoop of ice cream and some evaporated milk top it off. Other desserts include sticky rice with sugar/dessicated coconut/coconut milk/local purple root called UBE and then it's either baked, boiled or steamed. Thailand does a stickyrice with ripe mango as well as a poppyseed jelly and countless other jellies. Deep fried cooking banana smootherd with sugar or wrapped in a thin flour wrapper that fries to a crisp. Fresh coconut cut into strips and mixed with cream/condensed milk, jelly and coconut palm and chilled-NATA DE COCO yum!

Fried bananas! Or those delicious pastries with red bean filling. Japan has some kick-*** pastries, as does China. Or the ice creams in unique flavors that others mentioned. I didn't really notice too many different desserts when I was in China/Japan except for all of those delicious baked goods.

When we were in China, the only dessert offered often was fruit -- with grape tomatoes. We did find bean cakes and some other sweets at Chinese groceries.

in china i've seen egg custard tartlets and fried pastries with sweet lotus filling and sesame seeds on the outside.
in japan, people don't really eat desserts after a meal but they do like to eat sweets at tea time ... most traditional japanese sweets, called "wagashi", are made from sweet bean paste and tend to be really really sweet (so a bit much after a meal). In the summer, cold sweets like jellies and kanten (agar) based desserts are popular.
