hi there

i am not quite sure what your question is. What i understand (as a surgeon) is that when we leave retention mattress sutures, the tissues to be closed are weak enough to be repaired by the simple sutures.

Example: In a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, after the repair of the aorta, the intestines and the other tissues might still be edematous, it might be hard to repair the abdominal wall with assurance. What we do is, we put additional stronger sutures in between the usual sutures to stay in place for a month or two. We then remove them when they arent needed anymore.
