Successful planning.
1. Start with a theme. It doesn't necessarily have to be a cheesy theme like luau, but pick something. For example you can choose a color, an era, etc.
2. Make sure that there are different areas "sectioned" off. You can do this with lighting, seating, music, etc. This way people can move to an area they are most comfortable in.
3. Have food that is interactive. Plated meals tend to leave people quiet.
I threw a party recently for my brother in law that everyone seemed to love. My theme was red for him.
In my den I set up a card table with a few extra chairs. Cards is a pretty big thing in my family, we play everything from poker to spades. It ended up being a world series of poker game and a spades tournament. This room I decorated very lightly with a red plastic table cloth and a few red balloons. I kept it well lit.
In the living room, I removed a lot of the furniture and stored them in the bedroom. I basically just kept everything that can be sat in with a few tables for cups. I also removed a lot of the lightbulbs and exchanged them for lower wattage bulbs and a few red bulbs. Instead of having flowers, like I generally would for a more feminine party I put out fishbowls that I bought at the dollar store filled with red candy. Sweedish fish, red hots, laffy taffy, air heads, and I happened to find some chocolates that had red wrapping on them. They weren't very good, but they fit the theme of the party. Because the crowd was differing in age I made CD's with music that was pretty diverse. I went all the way back to the Stylistics and as modern as Amy Winehouse. Everyone heard some music they liked.
In the dining room also used a red table cloth some large red candles and dimmed the lights. People ate here as they liked, but we later moved the table for dancing. On the dining room wall I put up a red sheet with an attached marker so everyone could leave him a note wishing him well. The well wishes were funnier as the night went on. I also had the bar in this area. I also had some chips and salsa on the table.
On the screened in porch I put a few plastic chairs, ashtrays and decorative citronella candles with a radio with more modern music. As the night progressed I brought out some chips and salsa.
We have a pretty large eat in kitchen, so I kept the majority of the food in there. I did a mexican "bar" with all the fixings for tacos, fajitas & burritos. For dessert I made a chocolate fondue that I seasoned with a little hot pepper.
One thing a lot of people also forget is the bathroom. Get a little radio and have some music, and a scented candle. Also make sure that you have nice soap, lotion and towels that are designated for the party. Believe me people will notice and talk about it.
Oh, and plenty of Margaritas!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist.
A successful mature adult party becomes successful when there are 2 key elements:
1) No Children
2) Mature Adults.
Sounds simple.... But I've planned my fair share of parties... And I must say... I've had a better time at a BarMitzvah than some of the "adult" parties.
Anyway, get into the mood of theming out the party ...
Make sure that even your most "wall type" person will have a good time. This comes rom knowing who's on your guest list. You can get those ppl. involved so they won't be the "wall flower". Stimulate everyone in the room with whatever you come up with...
I hope you have a good time.

DISCLAIMER: I do not and will not watch hentai. This is just a simple observation I have made over the past three years: Actually, perverts are one of the better income providers for anime in all. There are many artists trying to get a start in japan. What they usually end up doing is something that catches a 'right on target' crowd, which happens to be the hentai peoples. They are always looking for something different, not caring if it's beginners work or simple (like a penthouse or hustler magazine) and just go out and spend money on it. Crazy huh? Kid anime is sort of hard to make any money off of unless it becomes obscenely popular and hard core anime (for the fan cliches) only brings in a fixed amount. The hentai cliche, however, has an age range from about 15 (curious teens) to 90 (yes, perves never grow up). sorry, that explaination was a bit skewed. nya

This question makes me wonder what age you consider mature adults. I think 60+ personally. My grandparents always go out to dinner and then have their whole family over for a bbq. There are twenty of us, so that makes it interesting in itself.
If by mature adults you are speaking of a somewhat younger set, the best party I've been to lately is my friends 21st. There was alcohol, but not much. We played twister, and listened to older songs. The ones everyone knows. It mostly depends on the person though!

This question is very hard to answer objectively. I have found that the parties that I come away from with the best feelings are sometimes the same ones that someone else says "Did you go to the party last night? It was the most boring party I have ever been to."
What I enjoy is good conversation, interesting people, a good variety of snacks (that fit all diets) and plenty of seating.

It depends on the guest of honor. If the party were in my honor, I would say plenty of full 80 scuba tanks, deep sea rods and reels, squid for bait and two big fat bottles of liquor. A Big bag of limes and enough shot glasses to make everyone happy.
The liquor would be Jose Cuevor black and Grand Manier
and the fishing spot would be off the panhandle coast about 18 -20 miles in the gulf of mexico.
this is how the party would start.
First, before any liquor bottles were tampered with, we would ALL dive the shipwreck Mica and use up most of the air.
then we would fish for gruper, red snapper and dolphin (Mahi Mahi) not flipper... and drink up most of the liquor.
NOW... That would be a GREAT party

I am a Pure Romance consultant and I think they are so fun. Its obviously a setting for adults only (like a fun party, but with class). They are free, except what you want to buy if anything. They come out to your house or where ever you want and bring the fun to you and your girlfriends (women only). This is the website for them and mine (so you dont think Im trying to sell you anything...you can just visit the home page for them if you want). This will have a link on both sites to book a party or you can shop online (or become a consultant if youd like).
www.pureromance.com in the main website (home page)
OR
www.nicolekinman.pureromance.com is my page

board games are fun and everyone can join in, good music is a must, play the music that you use to listen to when you were growing up (if guests are same age as you) everyone will know the songs and it may even get some people up on the dance floor and always good food, thats a must !

Excellent planning. From the music down to how the furniture is arranged to allow people to mingle. Also inviting people that have things in common.
