Genital warts is caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). There are over 120 different kinds of HPV, but the kinds of HPV that cause genital warts are sexually transmitted.

It's very possible she got the virus (HPV) from you. It's estimated 75 - 80% of the world will have HPV at some point in their life and about 80% of those infected are unaware they have the virus. Since there is no test for men to detect HPV, it's basically impossible for men to know if they have the virus or not. Most men find out they have the virus from either developing warts themselves, or from finding out their girlfriend or wife has been diagnosed with HPV (from the boyfriend or husband).

It's also possible that she had the virus long before she started dating you. I have had HPV for 6+ years and I didn't develop genital warts from it till about a year and a half ago. If it wasn't for the cervical cancer I developed when I was first diagnosed, I would have never knew I had the virus until I developed the warts. Many people have the virus and are just unaware of it until they develop symptoms (if they ever develop them).

And last, it's possible that she did cheat on you.

Either way, HPV is VERY common, and for the most part it's pretty harmless. Most people can get rid of the virus on their own. Their bodies can basically "fight it off". For others, they will have it the rest of their life because there is NO cure for HPV. The virus can cause warts, including genital warts, and it can also cause cancer (the most common is cervical cancer). Good luck!

In order for your girlfriend to get genital warts, she would have to have sex with someone that had genital warts. HPV is a virus and there is no cure for it.

I am not going to tell you definitively that your girl was cheating on you, but I can tell you that most often when a girl has HPV, she has it on her cervix. HPV is the number one cause of cervical cancer in women. She may of had this for decades (depending on how old she is and when she became sexually active) and not known it. Often times this will go undiagnosed until she has an abnormal pap smear.

I would ask her how many partners she's had prior to you. It could have been someone from her past, not someone that she's cheating on you with.

FYI: If she has genital warts, you most likely do too. It's just a matter of time until you see one or two. Over 60% of the world has HPV, even if they don't have any visible warts on them.

I have included a link below for your reference.

Calm down, over 80% of the worlds population have HPV. There are millions of different strands of it some pop up as warts and others are just a virus living in our bodies. It can take years for sypmtoms to show. It shows up on women easier than men. So if she wasn't a virgin when you guys got together, she may of had from another partner, or if she was and you weren't then she may of gotten it from you. Even if you don't have the sypmtoms. Men are usually carriers, and there is a 2-3% chance of getting it orally.
No matter who you are, if you have had sex then you have come in contact with this virus.
Oh and one more thing, a mother can pass it to her child during birth.

Genital warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, which is sexually transmitted. This does NOT mean she has been cheating on you, though. HPV can remain symptomless in both men and women... often for a long time. You could be the one who transmitted the virus to her even if you've never had symptoms OR she could have contracted the virus from a previous relationship and never have known it until now. Don't jump to conclusions on this one.

Genital Warts

What to Watch For:

- Symptoms show up 1-8 months after contact with Human Papilloma (HPV), the virus that causes genital warts.

- Small, bumpy warts on the sex organs and anus.

- Itching or burning around the sex organs.

- After warts have been removed, the virus remains in the body. The warts can come back. There is no cure for HPV.

How Do You Get This STD?

-Spread during vaginal, anal and oral sex with someone who has genital warts.

What Happens if You Don’t Get Treated?

- You can give genital warts to your sexual partner(s). You may transmit the virus (HPV) even without having the warts.

- Warts may go away on their own, remain unchanged, or grow and spread.

- A mother with HPV can give the virus to her baby during childbirth.

As other people have said this is something you catch, however it dosn't mean your g/f cheated on you. She may have caught them from a previous lover and not had an outbreak before now. It's possible you have infected her, you may have caught them sometime ago, the virus that is, without having the actual warts and passed it on without realising. The only way you can guarantee it wasn't from you is if you never had genital contact or if your condoms have always been 100% effective and always fitted properly (you do use condoms don't you??)

They are sexuly transmitted either one of you could have had them. Genital warts some times do not come out for a few months or years I have had a lot of patients that have them. It does not mean she is cheating on you. one of you could have contracted them before yall were together.

I worked for a OBYGYN DOCTOR 6 years.

Nope, its from the HPV virus. Make sure you dont have the virus, get yourself tested. The virus could have been dormant in her and then now caused the warts so it doesnt mean she cheated on you.

HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)
HPV affects both women and men.
• Anyone who has any kind of sexual activity involving genital contact with an infected person can get HPV—-intercourse isn't necessary.
• Many people who may have HPV may not show any signs or symptoms, so they can pass the virus on without even knowing it.
