The most common way, and the most preferred way, of testing for herpes is when the person is experiencing an outbreak. The doctor will do a physical exam, which sometimes includes a pap smear for women, and they can also take a fluid sample from the sores.
If a person is not on an outbreak they can be test by a blood sample.
Good luck!

They do a culture test, they swab it with a q-tip and send it to the lab for testing. Some doctors will just look at it and tell you what they think. I went to an std clinic with an outbreak present and the nurse told me it was just a pimple or something. Turned out I did have genital herpes so make sure you get the the proper testing. I hope you don't have it but If you do have herpes it really isn't a big deal. I have had it for 8 years and it plays a very small role in my life. ALOT of people have it you'd be suprised, some have it and don't even know. It doesn't cause any other "problems" then some irritation from time to time and some people get outbreaks very infrequently while others who get them often simply take valtrex and rarely ever see an outbreak again. Another good thing to know is that after a while you see it less and less so you can go years without ever getting an outbreak.
Good luck,
Swift

Yes, there isn't any. Herpes is caused by a virus. Actually, there is little cure for viruses nowadays. The only thing that you can generally do in the case of a viral infection is strengthen the immune system and hope it fights it off. Not with Herpes, the immune system can't win against it. Thus you only get to treat the symptoms. Once you're infected, it stays with you for life. So don't get infected.
Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/Cureherpes2o156UmG
Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

They will do a swab test.
But unlike the above person said, it doesn't cause problems if left untreated. All treatments can do is shorten length of the outbreak. There is no cure. But don't worry, most people get cold sores anyway. Go get yourself checked out to be sure though. Especially if you are concerned.
