I have read that most vegans do not agree with owning pets. I was wondering if that was true.
I just want to say, that it is too late to release any pet into the wild. Rodents will get killed, birds cannot survive, fish will most likely die, dogs & cats will die and could not find enough food, horses & livestock would not know what to do if they were raised on farms.

There is one exception to what you are saying.... actually two... horses would be fine.... but for sure, as long as you have not had a cat declawed, they have no trouble making the transition from pet to wild. They are quite facinating as a species.... they are the only animal that people consider domesticated that have retained every single adaption for life in the wild.... they are still marvelous hunters and have no use for humans on a survival basis.
I find some of the super vegan ideals in conflict with owning pets...... it seems strange..... but vegans are just like omnivores in some aspects I have learned, in that they are as varied in belief as any other category..... just like some meat eaters don't eat ground meat but eat steak, some eat fish but won't touch pork.... on and on and on..... it's endless, the variations..... the same with this group.... they are all people.... making them all unique.

Yes, they make vegan cat and dog food. Its irresponsible to feed your cat vegan food only, however dogs can thrive well on a vegan diet. And mikey up there is incorrect and I guess basing that on opinion, as many vegans have many animal companions..I have cats, whom I adore. And ya I get them all fixed. It truly is crueler in the long run to not fix your pet. There is no guise there. But thats a whole othet topic.. :)

I'm vegan, and do have a dog. I've never heard of any vegan or vegetarian being against pets, but have heard some call them "companion animals" rather then "pets", and insist that they don't "own" them.

I would imagine that most vegans wouldn't be happy feeding meat to cats or dogs. So for that reason, I think it's best that they don't have those animals. Rabbits and other animals that don't eat meat wouldn't be a problem. I don't think it's cruel to keep pets if they are well cared for.

I'm a vegetarian and I also have 5 dogs and 2 cats (I have enough land for them to run around on). All these animals seemed to have 'found me', and I wouldn't give them up for the world!

i dont think so.. because wouldnt they treat their pets with respect and let them live a long great life in luxury? i know 4 ppl who each own many dogs, cats, fish and other pets. i think they take in the animals to help them...IF they truly were animal lovers.

I am vegan and my pets own me, not the other way around. And I feed meat to my cats, they need meat.
