If a woman has herpes but no outbreaks, is it possible for a man to contract it while performing oral sex on her.

Yes.

Herpes can be spread whether the person is having an outbreak or not. It's possible the woman can be "shedding". If she is, and a man gives her oral sex, it's possible for her to spread the virus to him. He would then have cold sores.

Genital herpes can be spread to the mouth from the genitals and vice versa.

The man may get cold sores from Genital Herpes.
Genital herpes cannot be cured. Once infected, the virus stays in the body for the rest of the individual's life
Research suggests that the virus can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms present, so that a sexual partner without obvious genital herpes sores may still transmit the illness. In fact, asymptomatic spread may actually contribute more to the spread of genital herpes than do active sores. HSV-1 is responsible for only 5-10% of genital herpes cases, while HSV-2 causes the majority of genital herpes cases. HSV-2 can be transmitted through oral or genital secretions.
Please see the web pages for more details on Herpes simplex infections.

You can contract HSV2 (the virus which causes the majority of genital herpes) orally through oral sex but this is rare as HSV2 is better adapted to the genitals. If you did contract it orally, it is unlikely that you would ever have an outbreak or cold sore caused by HSV2.

If she had genital HSV1, the virus that more commonly causes oral herpes, you could catch cold sores, but the risk is much lower than kissing someone because HSV1 is less active when it is outside its 'site of preference', the mouth.

THERE IS NO WAY YOU COULD CONTRACT GENITAL HERPES FROM GIVING ORAL SEX TO SOMEONE WITH GENITAL HERPES. THE MOST YOU COULD GET IS ORAL HERPES.

It's very unlikely.

I've dated women in the past with herpes and have never caught it. In fact, I've never even had a cold sore.

But whether you can catch it or not if there's no outbreak is still up for debate. There's a lot of medical research that goes both ways. Personally I think your odds are very slim.

Of course you can still get it. I'm going to say I hope you didn't do that and you were just wondering, especially if you know she has it. But if you already went down on her I hope your T cells are strong enough to fight off the virus bcuz sooner or later you're going to have open sores around your mouth, Eeeeww!!! But seriously thats how most ppl get herpers, think about it for a second. If a guy or a girl see that their partner has sores on them do you think they would even have sex or oral sex??!!! H*ll no!!! But since they don't see any breakouts they don't know they're being effected with the virus. It's just like saying "You can't catch HIV unless the person is sick" and we all know that' soooo untrue. Good Luck and be safe next time

Look up photos of herpes on the web. They are gross. Yes, you can get outbreaks on your mouth. Not cute.

Any contact with skin actively shedding virions has the possibility of transmission.

Im just curious as to why other posters have to include information the asker clearly didnt ask for.

Yes.
Thats why most get STDs in the first place because others seem to have no signs of having one.

So they assume its safe.

Sorry, but yep. You can minimize the risk by doing the old "saran wrap" trick. (Go down on her through a sheet of saran wrap.) But that's kind of a mood kill.
