An invention is a thing put to a new purpose or use though human ingenuity. Therefore the first "invention" was the wooden spear.

Making clothes because they knew they were naked and for protection from the weather. Then tools/weapons. I'm sure fire was invented by accident after rubbing or banging stones together. The first fires had to have been from lightning. So, by the time they started that first fire, they'd seen what it could do and they wanted it.
It was powerful.

It depends a little on how you define man. I would tend to agree with those who say it was tools to aid in the gathering of food. Except, as the use of tools by modern chimps demonstrates, it does not require human like intelligence to invent such tools.
I would say that the first truly human invention was either art or language.

Do you mean for which there is evidence? If so, the stone ax is the earliest dated human technology intentionally forged. Multi-purposed, the stone ax was used to dig up roots and to smash and cut vines, meat, sinew, skin, and bones. Interestingly, chimpanzees use sticks as levers and picks. They dig into small crevices or other places too small for their hands, and they use sticks as levers to pry things open, but those are not forged tools. They are found incidental tools.
Sorry Darrel, I didn't see your response about chimps till later.

Man invented God... in order to explain his self-awareness when he saw his reflection in the watering hole, emotional pain and suffering when a loved one dies, the feeling of guilt and remorse for not doing enough to save his butchered family from the neighboring clan.

No-one knows, but possibly the use of sticks or stones to get at food that we would otherwise be unable to eat.
Weapons is also a good and plausible answer.

"And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves girdles." (Gen. 3, 7)
So the first invention of man were girdles, a vestment (made of sewed fig-leaves) to cover the intimate parts of the body.
