Talk to breeders ,go to dog shows. I owned a whippet a long time ago. He was a great dog,but he loved to chase things ie. cars, deers dumptrucks. A fenced in yard I think is a must plus they need a active owner. Whippets hate to be left alone! They will dig, chew through anything to get to there owner, even concret. They tend to be quuite nervous around new people. Also what is your wearther like, Whippets do not do well in cold weather, they need sweater, and boots to protect them. Adopt- A- Greyhound is a program to save race track dog, They tend to be a bit more laid back and are not quite so active, they've done their running. Bye BLUE

The American whippet clubs home page is quite good at describing the breed.

For both breeds:
The biggest thing to remember they have thousands of years of chase instant bred into them so they WILL chase anything that moves quickly (including a blowing scrap of paper) so don't trust them off lead in an unfenced area.
Puppies are active & mischeous and get it tons of trouble fortunataly that tends to wear off by about a year and half and the adults are usually calm, reasonably polite house dogs.
