A forked road is symbolic of a decision; it represents the "directions you could go." It does NOT represent the destinations at the final end of the road. Standing still at the forked road would mean that one is contemplating a decision, or maybe even that one knows that a direction must be taken, but is stopping because they don't know what to do next.

As your earlier poster said, it means you don't know which direction to take. To me it also suggests how choice can sometimes be a negative - we often see variety and choice as a good thing - different varieties of Baskin Robbins, Levis, whatever - but how much does that really help us?

If I am ill I want the best doctor - I don't know about treatment so how does it help me to choose one medication over the other.

At least - that's what I would read into it.

To me it means that I've come to a point in my life where I must make a critical decision that will affect my future and am unable or unwilling to decide which path to follow. Nice quote.
Here's my favorite:
"Mother is the name for God in the mouths of little children."

The meaning was already well explained.
here's a funny take on the situation:

It reminds me of that quote about the yellow woods.
I think it is beautifully simple but makes you think a lot.
a good quote will do that.
Thanks.
