It is because they are on heat i had the same problem with a stray i took in, she was around 2 years old but i have never had a problem with my own 2 year old female, this is because she has been sprayed, as soon as a got the stray spayed it stopped. At 8 months the cats should well be spayed its recommend to get then done at 6 months.

Like all animals, cats need to learn that the litter box is where they should go. You need to train them.
I found with my cat that the best way would be to place them in the litter box let them jump out and then place them in again. Do this a couple times and they may get the idea.
I find that cats learn quite quickly although you should do it everyday for a week just in case.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Different cats pee on different things.. Mine used to love newspapers (and current dogs love them too.. Something special in the newspapers in my house, I guess!). Find out what they like, and keep a soiled one nearby, so they smell the pee and go and pee there itself. But the existing pee shouldn't be too much, otherwise they'll get ewwed away from it.. Just experiment a bit, it'll get ok.. Spray some pepper on the place they keep peeing often, it drives them away the next time they come..

Because you did not train them to use the litter box and they have trained themselves to urinate in other places . I have found simply placing them in the box and dragging each leg paw in the burying waste motion shows then instantly what to do . If you go down a few posts another person asked how to train cats to use the box read that has very good tips as well .

very possibly they are not yet litter box trained or they may have a urinary tract infection in which case you need to have the vet check them out. When we have pets, we take on the responsibility for their well being-if it is an infection,it will only get worse. Is there a strong pronounced oder to the .

they are either being territorial.. which is usually cured by having them fixxed. Or they could be sick (especially if this is something new). Inappropriate peeing could be the sign of something like crystals in thier urine which can only be cured by feeding them special food. I had the same issue with my cats

They are competing for teritory...Spay them, if you haven't already,a nd consider adding another litterbox. Many cats just don't like to share and will pee outside the box if they feel like they are made to.
