Three businessmen are on a trip and share a hotel room for the
evening. The bill comes to 30 dollars (it's a cheap hotel) so each
businessman pays his even share - 10 dollars. They head up to their
room and the cashier realizes he's made a mistake. He forgot that
there's a special rate for the evening and that he should have only
charged the businessmen 25 dollars (it's a REALLY cheap hotel). The
cashier then instructs the bellboy to run up to the room and refund the
5 dollars to the businessmen. With his incredible insight, the bellboy
realizes that the businessmen cannot easily split the 5 dollars between
the 3 of them. So instead he pockets 2 dollars and returns 3 dollars to
the businessmen. The 3 dollars is returned and each businessman gets a
dollar back. At this point each businessman has payed 9 dollars out of his
own pocket, making a grand total of 27 dollars paid for the room.
Combine that with the 2 dollars that the bellboy kept yields 29 dollars.
So, where's the missing dollar?

There is no missing Dollar. They paid $30. The refund was $5 of which the bell boy kept $2. and returned $3.
So the maths goes $30paid - $5 refund + $2 kept by bellboy = $27 or $9 each.
Or $25 for the room, plus $2 for the bellboy equals $27 or $9 for each man.

They each paid $9 out of their pocket>$9x3=$27 (not knowing that $2went to the bellboy, which doesn't make a difference) plus the $3.00 they got back>$27+$3=$30, which is the total they started with. So there is no missing dollar!

ugh stop posting this same riddle everyone should no it by now. there is no missing dollar just wrong calculations:
1 man pays 10
2 man pays 10= 30-5=25 then Bellboy 2 gives back 3
3 man pays 10 2+3=5, 5+25=30

The grand total paid for the room is $27 like you said, but the bellboys $2 is included in that. To get back to the $30 like you are trying to just add the $3 on that was given back to the men.

The faulty reasoning lies in the addition at the end. 3 x $9 does equal $27, but the $2 tip is included in that $27, so it makes no sense to add the $2 to $27 to make $29. They paid $25 for the hotel room, $2 for the tip ($27), and then got $1 back each to make the original $30.

Believe me, this question has been around a loooong time!
