she will be fine. I had my boy neutered at 5 months and he weighed around 5 pds. Vets have spayed dogs and cats as little as 2 pds.
Recovery time varies from dog to dog. A younger dog will recover more quickly than an older one. The surgical wound ussually heals in about 10 days and then you take her in to get the staples removed. Sometimes a vet will use dissovable sutures, and they will dossolve as the wound heals.
My female was fine the next day and acted like nothing happened. She was neutered at 2 yrs old. My boy was sore for a few days after his neuter (he's such a big baby LOL)
You may want to request some pain meds incase she is sore for a few days afterwards. Some vets automatically give them to you anymore.

i"ll be honest a 5 pound chi should be fine after all a good chi should be between 4-7 pounds. They do this a lot. BUT remember any animal or human being put under or having any surgery there is always a chance of a problem.
The recovery varies by dog but usually they are kept overnight and by the time you get her she will be fine.
If the vet doesn't use dis solvable sutures then you will need to take her in in about 10 days for removal.
The main thing is DO NOT allow her to jump especially on furniture as this can rip the sutures.
Keep and eye on the suture area for any signs of infection and you should be just fine.
As they say DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

As long as your vet is competent everything should be fine.
All my dogs have been larger but the healing shouldn't take long at all, I'd say a week or so tops.
Don't worry! You're doing a good thing! Nearly all dogs and cats should be spayed and neutered to prevent unwanted puppies and kittens from flooding the animal shelters where they would have to be killed. The only exception to that rule and even that's a shaky exception, are those animals that are used in dog and cat shows. They are usually there so that they can earn higher breeding fees.

seems to me, it depends on their size as to how much aesthesia they give her (to knock her out for operation) : )
some info to help you out
"Procedures vary around the country/world and the recovery time
depends to some extent on the procedure and type of anaesthetic used so it
is best to discuss these issues with your own vet. (usually the ovaries and
uterus are removed via a midline incision and the ***** usually bounces back
pretty quickly if pre-op pain relief is given). As for the best time to
operate this should be before 1st heat which I would imagine your ***** has
already been through. Basically get it done as soon as possible. Bitches
have a tendency to put on weight after spaying so you need to keep an eye on
this. "

This is a great site, it has tons of information on spaying.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Recovery time is approximately ten days but will depend on your dog. Your vet will be able to advise you.
d.. Dogs will not put on weight following the operation provided they are fed sensibly and exercised regularly.
e.. Early neutering can reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies and some cancers in both male and female dogs.
f.. Unneutered bitches can suffer from unwanted pregnancies, false pregnancies, mammary cancers, ovarian cysts, and uterine infections. "
I'm glad your concerned. although, its a very common operation. it all depends on the post-op care as to how she will recover..and how long. my Chihuahua only took about a week to recover, but i heard some could take a little longer. just make sure she is comfortable and out of heavily traffic areas. i wouldn't keep her in the living room if its where everyone else is. i would keep her in a quiet area of the house with minimum noise. too much of this can make her nervous, stressed and could cause a longer recovery process. also, she may be sore for a few days or so, so just make sure you handle her with care. good luck :) Pam
I even have 5 chihuahua's and although basically a million is spayed, your canines will do wonderful. he would be sore and desire to take a seat down back afterwards yet you haven't any longer something to rigidity approximately. The vet knows what he's doing. :)
Don't worry, she will be fine! Vets know what they are doing. Great you are sitting with her though, you can keep her from licking the incision. Kudo's for a great decision and good luck...
