i need a way to help me fall asleep because my mom is worried about me and tells me that i need to have a normal sleeping pattern. Im a 15 year old boy and i have already been to the dr about it and it doesnt seem to be improving. im taking zoloft and seeing a therapist because the dr. thinks that i have things on my mind. She's right, i know that im up thinking about things, but sometimes i'm not thinking at all its like my subconcious is thinking too loudly so i can hear a machine hum that stops me from sleeping but i dont know what i'm thinking about. how can i stop myself from thinking when i dont know what im thinking about? im getting worried because therapy and meds havent worked and ive tried some other things, but it gets better then worse i dont have a sleep pattern. somedays i would get no sleep or just 2 hours. how can i sleep?

i have not been diagnosed with anything as far as mental disorders go, I am being treated for normal stress. I have tried Benadryl but most times that doesnt work either. I am just too awake thinking to sleep. Sometimes I even feel tired enough to sleep but I want to stay up because something is nagging me but i dont know what. I need to get a good sleep pattern because when i was goining to school I was groggy and sleepy all day, but not usually tired ehough to sleep when i got home. I need sleep but I cant get it unless I sleep in because usually if Im sleeping then i will stay asleep. One other thing, i cant do anything too loud to help me sleep because my family is sleeping so i have to be quiet. This means no TV and my music has to be really quiet.

One thing is for sure don't lay in the dark trying to go to sleep because all you do is get more frustrated. Watch a movie that is a light comedy anything but a drama. Try reading something light until you get sleepy. It is tough to do but don't go to bed with negative thinking, such as I just know I'm not going to sleep tonight because you just get more up tight and have even more trouble going to sleep. Try getting in the recliner or on the couch to help relax you so your mind in on something besides TRYING to go to sleep. I don't know if you drink dost drinks with a lot of caffiene but that definitely will keep you awake. You might want to try drinking all caffiene drinks and avoid chocolate which is also high in caffiene. Hope this helps.

No offense, but you are seeing a therapist and taking Zoloft. Now you’re on a message board asking for ideas on how to sleep.

I think Zoloft is an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant drug rather than a sleep aid.

If I were you I would either have a more in depth discussion with my therapist (is he/she a psychiatrist or a regular physician?) or find a new one.

Most doctors today do little more than prescribe drugs, but they know very little about pharmacology. They get their information from the drug companies’ sales reps.

The old saying was, “A pill a day keeps the doctor away.” In today’s world, “A pill a day keeps the patient away (from the doctor).” Many doctors today have well over 3,000 patients. They don’t have time to diagnose and prescribe, so they just prescribe. They often let the patient tell them which well-advertised drug he/she would like to try. Some doctors are no longer physicians. They are pill-pushers.

If you are physically active you should be able to sleep.

You need to attend to this matter sooner rather than later. If you convince yourself that you can't sleep you will have a serious problem down the road.

Develop a "schedule" to part of the evening a few hours before bed. Try to exercise outside air is really nice as getting someone sleepy, but Don't exercise too close to bed time, don't drink caffeine, limit sugar, and make sure you're eating a balanced diet. Medications don't always make it easier to sleep, but it is okay to take Benadryl at higher doses, I don't want to tell you how much (although I know) because I feel that you should consult your doctor (family practice not your therapist) before taking any medication. Try to find a book that you can read before bed... put a time on how long you read (like one chapter, or 15 minutes) then turn off lights (or use a night light if you want) and relax in bed.

Go to the store and buy melatonin. It is a natural herb that will help you sleep. Our brains produce this chemical naturally, so it is harmless and really does work. It is also cheaper than seeing a Dr. and getting on medication. Hope this helps.
One more thing have you been diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

Are you alert? Do you feel ok without sleep? If so, maybe you just don't need a whole lot of sleep. Otherwise, take 2 benedryls. They do a good job of knocking me out when needs be. You are to young to have a couple drinks - that also helps me when I feel tense in the evening.
I think that if you feel ok though - like you get 2 hours and are fine, then don't let your mom and doctor worry you - just realize that's how your body is and it will change if it needs to.

OK! Calm down................and relax try to clear your mind as much as possible, lay down get comfortable, and close your eyes........................Take a deep breath in and blow out slowly, then think of something quiet and peacful, it helps if you feel like your in a hammock swaying slowly back and forth, unless you get seasick easily then forget that, then go back to your happy place and focus on one thing, nothing active, something likeriver or the ocean....drift off to sleep.
