Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights,
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
It Happened in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, and gave us his all,
and a part of America died.

So how would you honor the men and women of law enforcement?

Mine is this poem. What is yours?

A.R.G.O.S. - last night some moderator/admin from Yahoo!Answers deleted Snazzlefrazz post honoring two fallen police officers in Indiana & Kentucy. A week earlier, someone named UKDMC, had his post deleted for honoring his late Father, a police officer with a 34 years service record!

Today, I am doing just that!
HONORING THE MEMORY of UKDMC's father and all the men and women of Law Enforcement.

I have gone over Yahoo's community guidelines and fine print. They have no lame excuse to delete this one!

May I also add KittyKat that it disgusts me also that the drunk driver who ran over Officer Evans only got 6 months jail time.

You have taken the time to answer this post. I can do no less than pay my respects to them and my condolences to their families.

I honor and pay tribute to all current and fallen officers and have done so through dedicating my Blog on both Yahoo 360 and MySpace. I am posting the links below and hope and invite all of you to visit and comment.

In my blog I chose to pay special attention to Deputy Frank Denzinger and Police Chief Randy Lacy who were both recently killed in the line of duty. I have also incorporated the writing that I received from all of you in the short time Yahoo Answers allowed my tribute to remain posted yesterday.

To all men and women in law enforcement, to those who gave their lives for us, and to all the families I cherish you in my heart and continue to love and pray for you always.

God Bless All of You,
Snazzlefrazz

I remember years ago as a new police recruit we would have to read the bio's of fallen officers for that day. Keep in mind each day an Officer dies. It may not make the news or even be spoken about at the local coffee shop but it happens. Some fall heroically. Others ambushed without warning. Either way they deserve our gratitude.

What is the best way to honor a fallen Officer? I guess its to keep their memory alive. Let it foster hope for the next generation and pray they become better than we are. That they learn from our mistakes and look to the future. That’s who I work for... the children of tomorrow.

Thank you -
God bless you, Snazzlefrazz, and all those who want to honor fallen police officers.
I find it interesting that people who hate the police can post ugly questions in here day after day, but the few who support the police have their answers deleted.
It seems to send a certain message about Yahoo Answers.
UKDC - I am so sorry for your loss. May God bless you in your time of sorrow.

I can only tell you how I would want to be honored if I ever become one of the fallen. I would want anyone that would to pick up my sword (figuratively speaking) and finish the battle for me. My goal in life is to make this world a better place before I leave it, to leave a good example for my children, and to take care of my family. I would hope that someone would finish my mission if I cannot. I expect that most police officers have similar goals.

So to those officers that have fallen, I think the best way to honor them is to ensure that their children receive the best education and love, guidance, and care that can be given to them. Their families, wives, husbands, or significant others, are comforted and are also taken care of. That someone would take up their fight with integrity, honor, courage, and dignity.

Continue to pray for the families and friends of those that have fallen; continue to pray for all of us that God will keep us safe and allow us to finish what we have started.

COPS give up their lives for total strangers.

I remember, when I was 10 years old, an officer died trying to save the life of some kids who were playing on the poorly frozen lake.

The ice broke and they fell through. The off duty cop fish all three kids out, but died later in hospital from severe hypothermia.

I honor him today by being a law-abiding citizen and helping other people, just like he saved me and my friends when we were ten.

My boyfriend's dad is a police officer with the San Franciso Police Dept. In their house is a commendation plaque that is inscribed:

"The PEACE CORPS is not the TOUGHEST JOB you'll ever love --- Wearing the BADGE is!"

My thanks to all the men and women in uniform and to those that have fallen.

God Bless you all!

Thanks for sharing your poem with us. I try to honor them by obeying the laws, being respectful to them when I see them, by remembering the living in my prayers and praying for the families of those who have died.

I worked at the Columbus, OH PD for 25 years and we lost several officers during my tenure there (I was there from 1975 to 2000) and it still breaks my heart to think of lives lost because someone was causing trouble (Marc Muncy) or because others didn't want to obey the law (Roger Brown/Michael Smith, Keith Evans, Chris Clites, etc).

Michael and Roger were deliberately hit head-on by a suspect who was running from the police.

Chris was shot in the eye as he and his partner searched for a suspect. The suspect was then killed by his partner when he drew the gun on him.

Keith was working traffic after the Red, White and Boom (about 500,000 go downtown for this each year) and the guy refused to obey so Keith somehow got caught up on the guys car and the guy drug him several hundred feet. The suspect only stopped then because people blocked him in, then his wife tried to wipe Keith's fingerprints off the window and car. Keith was in a coma for 6 days before he passed away. The suspect and his wife never showed remorse and he got very little time in jail for what he did.

Marc was on his way to assist/back-up another officer in trouble late one evening when he hit something in the road and went left of center and hit a semi. He was pinned in his cruiser so when two Deputy Sheriff's were unable to pull him free, they turned to get their fire extinguishers. Marc told them, "don't let me burn up in this thing". As the Deputy's ran to their vehicles, they heard a whoosh and they stood there in shock as they heard his ammunition exploding and listened to him scream in agony.

You can go to the below site and read reflections left by others (Marc's wife writes in his all the time) or you can leave your own comments and show your respect to those who have fallen.
