Take her to the vet. Increased appetite combined with weight loss could mean worms but it's more likely to be hyperthyroidism or diabetes.
The only way you can find out for sure is by having a vet examine her and perhaps run a blood test.

I agree with the answers who suggest the most likely problem is worms. I have multiple cats and dogs and buy the wormer that the vet uses from him. In eastern OK is it about $2 an ounce; but a ounce will last forever. I put it in a syringe without the needle and open the cat's mouth and squirt it in. If you spill some on their mouth, they'll lick it off--so that doesn't matter. The good thing about it is that you can use the same wormer on both dogs and cats. When you buy it, the vet will tell you how much to use. It is based on their weight; but, the amount varies by brand of wormer.
Don't waste your money on wormer at the store.

Lets see - you do not indicate the age - or whether kitty is indoor only - so there are many different things this could be -
Are there any changes in 'mood' or personality?, activity level? All of these tidbits can help a vet diagnose it.
I do not mean to alarm you - but I want to help make you aware of possibilities.
Yes - parasites like worms could do it, depending on the type - she could have bits or worms in the litter box when she leaves solids.
Diabetes could cause dramatic weight loss, but is usually accompanied by intense\constant thirst. Can be managed with diet & or insulin (just like people) but with very tight controls on amounts of each.
Thyroid issues are the first thing I thought of -
If your cat has this issue - it will be expensive....
She needs a physical exam - there could also be some kind of tumor or impairment of a major system (like immune system).
As far as cost - talk to your vet, see if they will work with you on cost - if you have a skill that is hard to find - see if you can work out a trade (useds to be known as barter and worked really well)

There are three types of worms that cats and dogs get, there Tape Worms, Round worms and Heart worms. But even with any of these kind of worms, usually animals do not become thinner, unless they become anemic. It could be another illness that is causing your cat to be so thin, you really should take it to the vet. There are so many things that can kill a cat and it happens so quickly, including Feline Leukemia. The best way to help your cat, is to have it checked. Heart Worm can not be detected through an animals waste, they have to be tested for it. And tape worm, in most cases only causes that kind of weight loss when the animal is under alot of stress. Both Tape worm and Round worm can be detected in the cats feces, and if you haven't seen any of the signs, I.E worm droppings, then it probably isn't worms at all.

The most likely cause is that your cats has worms. Take the cat in to the see a vet. Over the counter wormers do not work, so you will have to take the cat to see a vet.
There are other reasons this could be happening. Viruses & such, so definately see a vet.

Well my step-dad is a vet and I have a cat the same exact way and he has Feline Leukaemia. If I where u i would take him to the nearest vet and they can take blood from the cat and they can send it in to get tested. But don't worry to much it could just be worms or the cats diet.

If you can't afford a vet bill, you shouldn't really have a pet, if you had a baby, would you not take him/her to a doctor if they were sick? Pets are family members too, and they deserve the right to medical care just as anyone in your family would!
I would sugguest that you take her to a local shelter and perhaps she could find a GOOD home with someone who wouldn't be posting a question like this on yahoo, and would be instead trying to find a vet to take their cat to!
Here's a question for you......why get a pet in the first place if you can't afford to properly take care of one? And giving one a GOOD home means buying food, getting her veterinary care, and giving her all of the love an attention that she deserves!!!!
