He gave me freedom; he gave me liberty, he gave his life so I could live in safety. His sacrifice was so great, that I decided to return him the favor, so I became soldier too.
"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".

I have to echo the sentiment; the best thing a military member ever gave me was freedom.
The next best gift was when a fellow Marine saved me in Panama

From my hubby - A hug!! Best gift a girl could get after a year apart! But, he has brought me home Icelandic sweaters, gold jewelry, a silver tea set, and, my favorite, a desert diamond. Keep telling him I need him to back to Saudi to get the earings!
From my dad - I've got a wonderful doll collection with dolls from all over the world. Dad was special ops and went places we didn't know about until after he got home. And some we didn't know about until he retired!

My freedom, that's the best gift that anybody can possibly get from members of our military. Everything else is moot.

When he came home on leave he gave me a green hat that said Ireland, because one of his stops was in Dublin. It was funny, because he doesn't like green. And he gave me stuffed animals. He's always giving me stuffed animals that make him think of me. But seeing his face after 6 months, his smile was gift enough. Now I'm waiting for our next "first kiss".

*That knowledge that we just couldn't get from another. No teacher can tell you about politics and geography if they have never been there. Sorry teachers, its truth!
*Those skills of survival.
*The realization that nothing is free, especially freedoms, they are earned, and should be upheld and respected.
*The mentality to watch your back because others want it, and try to steal it, and you have to stop them from taking what isn't theirs, they have to earn it like we did.
* The acknowledgment that life is precious and shouldn't be taken lightly, and should be protected, for ourselves and others who DO Appreciate the Costs of that Upheld Freedom.
