This is interesting.
So often, we get caught up in a debate over political semantics and end up ignoring the hard-shell realities of what we're talking about. According to immigrationCounters.com, Here are some of the realities that Flake-Gutierrez Bill would airbrush out of the picture:
Number of Illegal Aliens in the Country 20,807,645
Money Wired to Mexico City since January, 2006 $22,213,001,672.00
Cost of Social Security Services for Illegal Aliens since 1996 $397,450,739,563.00
Number of Children of Illegal Aliens in Public Schools 3,958,789
Cost of Illegal Aliens in K-12 Since 1996: $13, 965,063,431.00
Number of Illegal Aliens Incarcerated 332,594
Cost of Incarcerations Since 2001 $1,398,127,429.00
Number of Illegal Aliens Fugitives 642,799
Skilled Jobs Taken by Illegal Aliens 9,872,838

Figures can trick your eyes. Take particular note that items 2,3,5, and 7 reflect BILLION not millions of dollars -- and that item 3 exceeds one-third of a TRILLION dollars.
Can you imagine how much it will cost taxpayers if we triple the number of Illegals entering this country!!
****************
So, What's in a Billion?.......
Granted................. this is from the US!
The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want the "politicians" spending your tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division . .

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), and David Vitters(R) are presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number, what does it mean?

a. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

b. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787.

c. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, DC. .... HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

This is too true.........And these numbers don't lie.........and, it's not funny!!

Thank you for some facts to back up what I have been ranting about! The only figure I would question is the total number as they didn't exactly check in when they came. INS estimates range from 23 to 48 million! It all depends on what percentages they are catching. I think even their 1 in 7 estimate is a bit optimistic! Point being our population could double after they bring in all their family members. We would, real quick, be another Mexico complete with killing poverty and total corruption! Hope you really love taco's if there is any food left at all. (Actually I do, I think there food and music is great. I have absolutely no problem with LEGAL immigrants!)

Each and every one of us needs to call and email our senators every day till this country killing bill S1348 is stone cold dead!

AJ - let me help with some of your quite reasonable questions. Since many people have the same misunderstandings as you do I will help to clear it up.

Money wired to Mexico is a HUGE deal because if those funds were earned by Americans, as they should be, then there would be billions of dollars staying in the US, helping our economy and allowing more jobs and higher pay for all.

Social Security - yes they do receive benefits via several sources. Illegals do use fake or stolen SS#'s all the time. They then can aquire benefits in the form of SSi or any other form of assistance relating to workplace injury, old age, etc. They also are able to suck our system through their anchor babies, in which they feel impunity from deportation.

School - Since our schools are so bad, and they must be because hispanics drop out at the highest rate ever seen in this country then why don't you just go home? It costs over $10,000 per kid per year. And they get free breakfast, free lunch, ESL instruction and special assistance as needed.

Crime - yeah they only come here to break our laws. Thats why there are more people in the world who want to immigrate here then anyplace on earth. How many people want to immigrate to mexico? Only a few that are en route to the US.

As for their taking skilled jobs - well ya got me there. I haven't heard of an illegal knowing how to do anything in a skilled manner so I'll give you this one.

lol I find this quite funny myself

Personaly this looks like one of the great Email scams that people love to forward on to all thier friends. My first clue is that number of Illegal Aliens in the Country 20,807,645 claims they know to the number how many Illegal Aliens their are in the us it's not 20,800,000 like most people who were making a estimate would do (this has to be a estimate because no one know how many Illegal Aliens are living in the US). Some how immigrationCounters.com know that there are 20,807,645 how do they know this did they count them. Also evey dollar amount is down to the last dollar, Once again how do they know down to the last dollar? I guess I sit here scratching my head try to figure out how these guys have come up with the number they have put out. The Us goverment cliam that they have no clue how many Illegal Aliens their are in this country. If the Us goverment with all thier resources dosn't know. How do the people who run this web site know?

I truely hope most people don't beleave every thing that is Emailed to them or even they find on some site on the internet. If you look you can find a web site that will say about anything including the earth is flat ( http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm ).

Illegal Aliens have become the lastest people to blame for this countries economy. Lets not blame the fact that businesses are shipping jobs off to Mexico, China and other countries to cut thier cost so they can make even larger profits. Lets blame the people who have come into this contry looking for a better life for themselves and thier families. Yes I know what they are doing is illegal but can you blame them for wanting a better life.

As for them taking skilled jobs most of them are have very little education. Most of the jobs thay take are ones most Amercans wouldn't take. Some through hard work may make it up to better jobs. If they do have jobs they are paying taxes and into social security. I know there are way around paying taxes but do you truely think most of them will risk having someone look to close at what they are doing to do this there is no way around paying social security. Most of the Illegal Aliens are hard working people who try to do anything they can to keep the goverment from find out who they are. I'll admit there are the ones who are taking advantage of the system but this is a small percentage of Illegal Aliens (my guess is a lot smaller then the general public).

katydid13--"They also have federal and state income taxes withheld from their pay checks and can't file tax returns"-This claim does not add up. Upon hiring at any job you are required to fill out the proper federal tax form indicating how much of your income you want withheld. You can choose a % or nothing. In the event you choose to have nothing withheld you are required to make up that amount, pay it back to the feds during tax time. If they choose to have nothing withheld and then they don't pay it back when their taxes are due then they get away with not paying federal payroll taxes. I seriously doubt few, if any at all, illegal aliens file a tax return. In the event they are using stolen SSN's then it is even worse as now the legal owner of that SSN can be held liable for taxes owed that are due from the work an illegal alien has performed.

AJ--there is plenty of evidence that illegal aliens have and do collect social security. Do a search. If you can't do that here is a link for a bill proposal that will eliminate the ability of any illegal alien to collect social security.

I have no problem allowing immigration into the United states as long as it is done legally. What I don't agree with is encouraging anyone of any race to just walk in the back door and do as they want. We as a nation have just let our government lie down on the job and not enforce the laws in our country except for those of us that are actually U.S. citizens.
What I mean by this is. To get a few extra dollars stuck in their pockets some of our great leaders decided not to punish any business that hired anyone illegal in this country due to the revenue that companies and their share holders make off cheap labor and then trickle that money through seperate individuals to keep our exalted rulers in their jobs.
The thing we should all be looking at and watching closely is the so called Guest worker program. This is just another way to outsource jobs. Take a look at what is going on in the world and decide for youself. Big Business needs cheap labor to get their profits up for their shareholders. So along comes outsourcing labor to underdeveloped contries to increase the bottom line.

We will call this "Outsource Slavery" for now.

This works great for awhile, but along comes higher energy prices which drives up shipping cost. So if your on the board you say hey we need to do something about these high energy cost. So the company heads decide to approach our great leaders and complain about labor costs in the U.S. and also energy cost. Our leaders say, You Know to bad we couldn't just figure out a way to outsource jobs in our own country to lower wage people. Hold it what a great Idea, we have how many so called illegal immigrants in this country? Let's just pass a new immigration law with a guest worker program attached where as to illegal immigrants can come here on a 2 year pass and work for less money than the american worker does. We will just tell American citizens that these people will do the jobs Americans don't want to do.
So there it is wow! Is it that simple? you ask. Yes It Is!
The reason I say we need to watch this is. If this gets passed not only will we be encouraging slavery but 10 yrs from now the 200,000 guest workers won't be enough so that number will have to increase because of demand from other business leaders who say its not fair that they can't hire more worker program people. So this will go back to the govt. to be increased as needed.

Now we'll call this "Innersource Slavery".

Now for what should happen in this country is as follows:
1). Imprison business leaders who break the law in our country by hiring illegal workers to a minimum of 10 yrs.
2).Take the already imprisoned people in our prison system and put them to work where needed to help pay for the cost of prison systems in this country and lower our taxes.
3). Implement a immigration bill that will allow people to come here legally to become U.S. Citizens and to Work, Live, Raise a family, Get educated and pay the same Taxes that we have to pay and follow the same laws we have to follow.
4). Get the leaders in this country who take money too make laws like this out of their jobs for good. Also, if caught taking money they should be charged with treason because thats what it is. Selling your country for your own personal gain is treason!

Let's look at your numbers:
- Money wired to Mexico - This money is earned money, they can do with it whatever they please. Besides, this is drop in an ocean compared to the invesment capital going to China.
- Social security-related drivel -Illegal Aliens cannot get social security benefits. If you disagree, show me any viable way of how they can do it without papers by simply being here.
- Children in school.- If the school system can actually teach these children (a big IF), in theory, they should become normal tax-paying citizens (after a few amnesties) and pay for their education many times over with their taxes. Where is the harm? The fact that the way education is implemented in a big waste of money is not illegal's problem.
- Criminals and associated expenses - This is what we get for creating a system where all we get is criminals. Law-abiding people do not come here since coming here either involves breaking the law or being tangled for years in layers of bureacracy.
- Skilled jobs filled - I apploud that. That's exactly what we need: more skilled workers who work for less and bring savings when I buy their products. I see nothing wrong here.

Wait a minute..... I can make these numbers seems reasonable with some over used chants and phrases:

"We are all immigrants"

"We do the jobs Americans don't want to do"

"We are here to stay"

" It's only 12 million of us....... come on make some room"

Did these chants and reasons make those numbers more reasonable?

I challenge the accuracy of your numbers. Many illegal immigrants actually pay social security taxes using social security numbers that don't really exist, but will never collect from the system because the number and card is bogus. It actually helps us out. They also have federal and state income taxes withheld from their pay checks and can't file tax returns because the social security numbers are bogus. They don't collect the refunds or earned income tax credit payments they would be eligible for if they were legal. Cite you source please?

Also how are you defining skilled jobs? According to the most research (like the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office) only a relatively tiny number of illegal immigrants even have a high school education so I find it difficult to believe they are taking what people truly think of as skilled jobs in large numbers.

I'm not arguing that illegal immigration is without cost or that is not a problem, but I am fairly confident some of those facts you cited are not facts at all.

To the person said you can simply not have any federal taxes withheld that is only true in extremely limited circumstance and probably not something someone trying not to call attention to anything odd would do. See the following sources for backup.

WOW.............talk about pissing away our tax dollars. And yet we don't get a say in it at all. And yet every politician since the beginning of time has promised to lower taxes, how, we can't afford to. Someone has to pay for all this CRAP!
