Craftsman is a very rustic and warts-and-all decor. It is where you see the function of each piece with no magic tricks of how things are put together. So you want to go with a low tech material, I suggest tile on the backsplash with tinted grout (you are supposed to see the joints of things), or brick, or ceiling tin with the rivets showing. Nothing sleek or slick.

For the counter, I would go with tinted concrete OR some form of stone whether it is marble, granite, soapstone etc. Something rustic and imperfect, not porcelain or anything. If you go with a synthetic or a composite, I would make sure it looks really authentic. Another option might be a butcher block counter on a small area of the counter, such as the island, but not all over.

How about tile? Tile goes with a lot of different styles. When my kitchen was remodeled, we even put tile on the wall behind the stove -- I love it.
