Hi!
Lucius Rossi painted a portrait of the William Astor family (I don't believe J. J. ll had 3 daughters and a son... and he had died before the portrait was painted) in 1878. It is referenced below in American Heritage magazine 1966. The show was a benefit and held at Wildenstein Gallery. The Astor family loaned the portrait for the show depicting Elegant New York Society families. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an image of the painting but you could contact the gallery as they must have something in their archives. Where did you see it?
Oh, I included the family tree... it's a little confusing:)
Good luck!

It is difficult believe, but there seems to be nothing about this painting on the web other than the visual below seen in the background to a portrait; The artist is not mentioned anywhere! But go to http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/node/616 You have to scroll down quite a long way to get to a photo of the" New Mrs.l Vincent Astor" - where this painting forms the background and includes the date you mention 1883.
