Just sympathize and say that it must not be easy with 5 kids. I think it would be great if you and your friend decided to pitch in and help get it cleaned up. I know that I have been in really messy houses and the kids have their friends over and nobody is helping with the mess. Friends need to realize that moms need time alone with their children to discipline them and make them clean. If friends monopolize too much of the familie's time, then the work doesn't get done by the people who should be helping. I can guarantee that mom will love you if you and your friend regularly pitch in and help her and get the other kids moving too. She will think you are a total saint.

"That's OK I'm used to your place looking like a pigsty."

Seriously though, I don't think it's something you really need to respond to. The mom is just making you aware that SHE is aware the place is a mess, so that you don't think she doesn't care or is a slob or is oblivious to the fact that her home is messy. I would just say something like, "it must be tough with all the kids in the house all the time." or perhaps you could say something like, "You should see my room, and I'm only ONE person!" Even if it's not true, it may provide some comfort to her.

ok so like one thing some people forogt to put into consideration is how long youve known the parents... If your confertable go ahead and joke around with them and add whatever comments these people gave you. Im pretty sure if they are confertable enough (or just dont care) to tell yous omething like that it would be ok to comment back, even a simple thank you for having me would do. Personally i like the "you should see my room" one but it doesnt have to be that exact phrase something similar to that is what i think would be cool

I think she would prefer the house wasn't so messy all the time. I only have two and it's difficult to keep up sometimes. Just smile.

You just say hello and thank you. She is simply trying to make you feel comfortable, and there's really no need to respond to the statement about the condition of the house.

Gosh it is quite untidy but not to worry I'm sure it's not always this way. I'm sure you're a pristine lady. If you'd like I'd be glad to help you tidy it.

Just laugh and say 'sounds like home then'

Actually, as its not a question you don't really need to answer -- she is just being nice and friendly and sort of apologising for the mess.

"you should see my room!"

just anything to make them think you know understand how a house can get messy, and you don't really mind it too much.

Just politely redirect the subject say something like, "*Chuckle* You should see MY house! =D" It's all good fun and no one feels bad.

Peace.
