In general I think in English, which is my mother tongue, although I often think too fast and it just comes in images (I'm guessing that's just the ADD). But because I studied French for a number of years, whenever I'm trying to learn a new language, I start thinking in French. I'd be sitting there in Japanese class, asking "comment dit on..." not able to figure out why everyone was staring blankly at me. Had the same problem with Russian- whenever I didn't know a word in Russian, I'd fill in the equivalent French word without even realizing what I'd done. I think the language learning part of my brain just freaks out and starts producing whatever it can to fill in the gaps.

But what language do you dream in? I've heard that you're really starting to learn a language when you start dreaming in it. But no one ever talks aloud in my dreams. So perhaps I don't have even a good enough grasp on English...

It has been argued that most thinking is not done with any language... I think in Japanese most of the time. English sometimes, it depends usually on which situation seems more revelant to a language. I also notice my patterns of thinking changes with languages, and so some thoughts require one language or the other.
If there is a possibily I may have to speak then it I almost always (always?) seem to be thinking in the language I would talk in.

Much to my chagrin I find that I generally still speak in my first language, American English, though after spending the past year in a Spanish speaking country I'm beginning to think in Spanish more often.

I certainly dream in Spanish more!

English, German, and Spanish - nicht usualmente separated, just all jumbled up together! :) Usually I only think in one grammar at a time, though - just fit whatever other language into the structure word-by-word.

Typically in English but if I'm really mad I'll curse to myself in German. I've also been known to think really good thoughts in Arabic. I'm so weird.
