it takes money and time and not to be crass, but shes not the only person missing, you know. I do agree seems like the whole waiting 24hrs to file a report and it takes awhile to get the FBI involved once the local police are in charge. I have a bad feeling about this one and I just dont understand why people do theses things. (IF it was the boyfriend, what a piece of sh*t) the whole thing is just terrible. And even tho the ex is a cop, I think that since after all the publicity of Lacey Peterson, this guy will not be treating special just because hes a cop, his fellow friends in blue will think hes the crap that he is and lock his a** UP!!!

If we are talking about the same woman, her family talked with her from time to time & got worried when they had not heard from her, then a co-worker called ... she had not been into work. So the family goes over to her house and finds stuff that freaks them out.
At this point she has been gone for at least 24 hours.
Suppose you were to go some place ... do you tell a bunch of people where you going, or do you just go? How are people to know for sure that someone is missing?
Remember the runaway bride? There was a huge search for her, but no one had kidnapped her. There's other cases like that.
The police have to interview the family that freaked to find out if they freaked for cause. Then they go interview various friends, because for all they know the pregnant woman is visiting some friend and it was a misunderstanding where she works. How long does that take?
Well the police probably have their desks piled up with
* who killed Frank
* who raped Mary
* who robbed the liquor store
the notion that some woman is missing is really a big unknown ... maybe she missing, maybe she not
unfortunately most crime statistics are when there is foul play, it is a family member or friend who dun it, so the police need to check time lines of all those people, because they are the likely suspects, so if it is really a stranger abduction, it may be a few days before they exhaust the usual suspects

Unfortunately, people have cried wolf to many times. These searches cost millions of dollars. All the ducks better be in a row before as they say "call in the dogs."
