I'm going to a karaoke party this weekend and I know I'll be forced to sing. I really don't want to humiliate myself any more than necessary. Any suggestions?

Please --- no "Right Said Fred" jokes.

The theory i have about karaoke is that the person who's brave enough to get up on stage and sing into a microphone to a song they barely remember in the first place is WAY too drunk to either care how they sound, or, much less, know all the lyrics. I would be willing to bet that the people who put the karaoke music together tweak something about the song. These songs aren't recorded by the original artists. They are "covered" by a studio band of the karaoke company's design. Thus, the said bands are capable of altering the tempo, vocal range, and the key in which the song is written.

For Example: A song that's originally written in 120 bpm tempo with a Ab - mid C range written in the key of A7 could have been altered to a 98 bpm tempo with a range of G - B re-written in A. Any of those variables can be changed during the studio arrangements.

But i digress. My statistics are more theory-based than a proven fact.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/eYNH4

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

First of all, karaoke is far more about attitude than ability. Project confidence and smile, and you'll be fine. Secondly, the best song to sing at karaoke is your favorite song - you know the words already, and how the song generally sounds.

That being said, if you must cherry pick a song that won't tax your voice, I recommend Elvis - "I can't help falling in love with you", for example, or Dean Martin's "That's Amore".

How about trying out 'Rhythmic American Poetry" or "rap" for short? It's the kind of music that blends the lyrics to the rhythm of the beat so there's never the chance of ever going off-key. Question is, is there rap music in karaoke??? Whatever happens though, a party is for everyone to have a great time and not get themselves all wound up... so let your hair down and enjoy coz anything goes!

Okay, I have a bias because I really am a big fan of this singer- his name is Morrissey (he was from The Smiths back in the 80's) anyway, he has a song called, "Sing Your Life" and one of the verses goes: "You have a lovely singing voice, a lovely singing voice, and those of us who sing off key, they stole the notion from you and me, so sing your life!" ( I'm sure a typical karaoke party won't have this obscure song) Is there a song you feel you would be comfortable singing? (I hate singing in front of people too. I can't sing to save my life.) Hmm, lol, what about "Bohemian Rhapsody" ( I'm sorry, I couldn't resist!) Good luck to you. Maybe you could have a few drinks and then you'd have some good ol' Dutch courage to get up there and do your groove thang!

"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Even the worst singer can get something...productive out of that.

It's good to pick a song with a singer that sings terribly in the first place. It will take away a bit of the humiliation. I'd recommend "Oops I Did It Again" by Britney Spears.

If you want to choose a good song, choose one with no high notes, since hitting those might make you sound like a dying hyena (no offense!). That new song "Umbrella" by Rihanna would be pretty easy, but if it annoys you, choose a classic song. "We're Not Gonna Take it" by Twisted Sister (surely, you remember that?) is not only easy, but also fun to sing.

And, to finish out, the new song "Dance Tonight" by Paul McCartney would be very easy, and somehow gets everyone off their feet and onto the dance floor.

Good Luck at the party!

Singing is something that everybody can learn and improve. Of course, some are more naturally skilled than others, but even a poor voice can be overcome by dedication, practice, and more practice. Even if you're content to sing in the shower, there are some things you can do to improve your voice. This is probably the best online course to improve your singing skills https://tr.im/sUKxI

A while back there was a popular song with a title of something like "A horse with no name." Anyhow, the song was a big hit and I think it only had two different notes. The only problem I see that if you sing this song, you will sound so good they will want you to sing an encore.

Something with no melody. Try rap songs. Or something that requires a voice range of a teaspoon. Country songs are always good for that stuff. Get a female friend and sing Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley. Johhny Cash is a good idea. Do "A Boy Named Sue". That song has barely any melody.

Best idea ever: Embarass yourself and have a good time!

IF you go with that idea, do "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls, complete with dance moves! (Been there, done that, had fun, still turn red at the thought of it!)

^I know how you feel I can't sing either. Hey you can always come down with laryngitis.

Try getting someone to sing with you, and you could do background or if they're loud enough, they can drown you out.

How about doing a Rap song, call the place and see if they have rap, that way you don't have to sing. You can sing A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash, he kinda talks through it and it has fun lyrics, how about the song tequila you only say one word. Check out the sites below, have a great time, good luck.
