M16.
The widespread popularity of the AK47 comes from the wanton production cycles it goes into, the relatively low required specs, and the ease of acquiring replacement parts.
This has nothing to do with the design of the rifle, it has to do with the fact that American companies have certain restrictions that Soviet/Russian companies did not. America was not about to put its combat rifle into the hands of every major communist and terrorist country in the world, and kept it to itself.
The AK47 basically shot out from a collapsed military, and became an effective assault rifle easily purchasable on the black market due to the influx of accessible Soviet hardware. The rapid capitulation of Communist countries as a result of the fall of the Soviet Union meant more and more guns were leaving more and more armies, and were becoming more and more valuable on the black market.
The M16 remains a higher quality assault rifle, while the AK47 remains easier to get one's hands on - simply because of the excess produced.
Quantity of the AK47 does not beat the quality of the M16, sorry.

Well tiger, the AK was not patterned of the MP44 (also called the StG44, not the MP55). The Russian were impressed by it, but that's about it. Interestingly, I have seen MP44s in Iraq. Apparently, the Russian gave some to the Syrians years ago, and they somehow made it there. A shame to have to destroy them, but they went into a burn pit. The AK is tough, rugged, and simple. The reasons many nations have them is not only because of the above mention qualities, but also because they were given to almost any nation who asked for them for next to nothing by the Russians. Many times they could not afford anything else. The AK is woefully inaccurate. I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to like to hit what I shoot at, I mean if I wanted to just scare 'em, I would throw rocks. So, if you want to hit something, pick something other then an AK. If you are an illiterate with no money, have no concern about cleaning a weapon, or killing the enemy at distance, the AK is for you. The M16 is a good weapon. People will poo-poo it all day, but many who do have never used one. It is accurate; it is more deadly for this reason alone then the AK, but its bullet is also more deadly then the 7.62x39 fired by the AK. The 5.56 fired by the M16 and the M4 have a great spalling and fragmentary effect that is very debilitating to a target. And that is the point, to kill what you are shooting at. Yes, true, you have to keep the M16 series clean, the reason for that is the tighter manufacturing specifications. I mean a soldier has to keep a weapon clean, period, it is life. The M16 had evolved to become a reliable and deadly weapon that could outshoot the AK for accuracy and lethality.
I would say the M16 and its depravities are the best all around assault rifles. They are the longest serving service rifles in US military history and that fact alone says allot. It had its teething problems, but it is still here, and doing its job.

I would pick the HK 416 or the Robinson or Robertson M-4 style carbine. They are vastly superior to the Colt M-4. The H.K. has the same gas piston system as the AK-47 and is more forgiving maintenance wise than the M-4 which has the blow back recoil system. There are a few politicians that want the army to reevaluate the main battle rifle and open the field of competition up to these other manufacturers.I could be wrong on the spelling and the model #. But not the fact's.

well, the AK47 has always been known for its reliability and can be beat to hell and still fire. The M16 has gotten more reliable but is still a major piece of crap, trust me. Heckler and Koch is an all around good gun manufacturer so im sure anything form them will most likely be a superb gun. I think you are speaking of the Steyr AUG but i have never heard of them but i have indeed seen the gun. I do have an opinion though. Personally i do not like the atypical style of the weapon so portability and accuracy will be decreased until you get used to the awkward gun. other than that i reall do not have an opinion.

I guess that depends on your combat zone. Overall, I'd say that the AK-47 is the best. It's rugged, powerful, reliable, simple, and it has history to prove it. But if you're in an urban setting, you're better off with an M4 than anything else. Because the AK-47 has **** accuracy when it comes to long range shooting. And it weighs a ton. But if you're out in the fields, the jungle or the forest, the AK-47 is the best.
The Heckler-Koch G3 is also a pretty decent assault rifle. Underrated if you ask me.

No, why don't use something better than what's on your list?
H&K 416 Assault Rifle, best Assault Rifle in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_&_Koch_HK416
XM8, almost came into normal U.S. service
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM8_rifle
FN SCAR, in use by a few SF groups across the services
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SCAR
These are the top 3 Assault Rifles of the future, since they are all out on the market and pretty new, they are all the best there is right now. The Hechkler & Kock 416 is the best, most well made rifle ever. Fully auto almost zero recoil, and small field of spray. It's really amazing compared to a day of shooting M4 Carine, and the M16A2. The H&K 416 was above and beyond any other Assault Rifle.

Nope, there's no best. They're all tradeoffs. Accuracy, weight, ammunition weight, effective range, maintainability, reliability. They're all different. It depends on who's using it where. The M-16 needs more cleaning then the AK-47, but the ammunition weighs a lot less, so you can carry a lot more. The FN is more accurate at range then the M-16, but it's heavier. It's all a tradeoff.

complete the round size- a m-4 uses a 5.56 x 45. Compare that to the pistol- 9x19. Yes the pistol has a bigger bullet, but it also does not reach the speeds of the much longer rifle round. The .45 moves even slower than the 9mm. The faster the bullet moves the more the round will shatter. The .45 has its own advantage of being much larger so larger initial entry is larger ( but the 9mm and .45 perform similiar in that they both create a similiar wound channel.) In the end, the better cartridge to use are rifle rounds. Pistols are pistols, rifles are rifles. Rifles trump pistol rounds in ballistic performance. However, they each have their place in operations. (Like SMG's that use pistol rounds, pistol rounds are easier to control on full auto in a smaller weapon.)

I would go with the AK-47. It been voted as number 1. I seen this show on the military channel and one of the show was called the top ten. They were showing the top 10 rifle. The people who place these rifle were experts on guns. I would go with the Ak-47 because it is call the universal killing machine.

The AK 47 is the best weapon with incredible accuracy and the AK-47 is generally more compact, has comparative range, is moderately powerful, and is capable of selective fire. It is the best automatic assault rifle. Me and my father saw the show in the military channel (our favorite) Top Ten.
