2002 Ford Explorer, it ran and worked perfect til this morning...it hadn't stalled or anything. But all of a sudden its stuck on P I cant get the gearshift to move, its stuck anyy suggestions? I dont really want to have it towed if theres any chance there might be something I can do. I've heard theres like a override unlock button, but I cant seem to locate it? Anyone with a ford explorer know WHERE its supposed to be?

your brake shift interlock is the problem. when th brake is applied,an electrical signal is sent to the interlock to release the shift lever. Have replaced too many to count.

Make sure your brake lights work, if not check the fuses. If they do you can turn the key to the first position (between lock and on) pull the shifter into neutral, start the vehicle and drive it into the shop for repairs. Assuming the brakelights work the problem is the shift interlock, not too expensive to fix.

in case you have get entry to to an OBD II code reader you may %. up a code on it. i've got confidence Autozone is doing it for loose presently. And this is definitaly a sensor concern. the main inexpensive first step is to get a code examine on it.

u might have a bad cable to ur tranny and u might need to replace that, cuz i knew a guy who couldnt put his car in park when he got home and drove into his garage...haha
