The Church recognizes a civil marriage already.

It can and will bless the marriage bond that already exists.

This is called a Convalidation of Marriage.

Here is an article about the steps involved: http://www.americancatholic.org/Newsletters/CU/ac0604.asp

Talk to your parish priest to get the process started.

With love and prayers in Christ.

You can have a very simple vow-taking ceremony in the presence of a priest or deacon and 2 witnessesor you can have a big one with a Mass,if you are free to marry(no impediments like a former valid marriage.)

My husband and I went through it about 9 years ago. It was a one-day workshop run by a married deacon. He talked about the Church's teachings on marriage, we did some worksheets, got our certificates, and that's about all I remember. We didn't have to share any personal information, if you are worried about that.
