The best advise is two fold. First, consistency in how your respond to problem areas. Ignoring may work but there are times when a time out or other appropriate consequence works.

Second, talk to a professional who specializes in those diagnosis. Call the local mental health center and ask to set up an appointment. I know because I worked for my state in the field of mental health for thirty years.

Medications do help some of the problems but are not the total solution. You will need to learn behavioral techniques for consistent reaction to various attitudes. Also, having the kids receive counseling will help as they learn ways to control their own behavior.

Unfortunatley there is no magic wand but there is help if you reach out and use the mental health professional available. If you don't have insurance, most state or county-run mental health centers are on an ability-to-pay or sliding-fee scale.

first of all have them diagnosed properly and then get help from the authorities. There are plenty of places to get help. First is your doctor, then health clinic or there may even be a support group in your town. Don't try to do it all on your own.

Also do some research on the Internet. I have lots of sites for information. Just google in ADD or ADHD and you will be amazed at what's available.

and Good luck .

Luck and a great support network. My oldest is adhd and my youngest is bipolar. I don't deal I just survive..lol. Really though contact local community service organization to ask about support groups and available training/parenting classes. Good Luck.

WELL, i do not agree with that other person on this matter, i myself have a child that has adhd, ocd, odd, and tourettes. and let me tell you that my experiences with my son has been very demanding and exausting. he is on medication and he definetly needs it. cause without it he can not sleep or can not function at all cause he is so distracted in every day life that he can not even put his oun shirt on and he is 7 yr. old. he is my little angel and i love him more than anything , but he has gave me a run for my money!!!! even at the age of 1 1/2 yrs. old he was a little bugger. he has allways been a big handfull.untill i put him on meds. now he is calmer and he can actually get dressed and do a couple things by himself. thanks for listening. mom of nick a cute little guy.

Be extremely structured in your daily life--same procedures for bedtime, mealtime, etc. and be very structured in the consequences (positive as well as negavite) for his or her behavior choices.

Be consistent in everything. If you do not allow it one day and then allow it the next day, this is very hard on an ADHD or ODD kid (ODD I happen to think is a made up "disease" to excuse poor/inept parenting).

Teach them coping strategies for their emotions. Like, when angry, count to ten type stuff. See a counselor for concrete ways to handle this--I cannot type all possible situations here. You may email me if you wish.

Model appropriate behavior yourself--Watch how you handle your problems in life and make sure they are learning age appropriate behaviors in the media as well--including monitoring tv and movies they watch, video games they play.

Medication is an absolute LAST resort. Try the behavior modifications and if you use them CONSISTENTLY (which is hard to do considering the chaos your home might have) you should see results. Like I said earlier, I do not believe in ODD-have never seen a true case, only poor parenting. I do not mean to insult you, but you asked and I am telling it as bluntly as possible. Please take it in a teachable, not insulting, manner. I have lots of respect for you trying to make your child's life better.

Above all, LOVE THEM always, but ESPECIALLY when you feel they least deserve it. Use patience and courage to parent these kids. God Bless!

They really aren't that is just a term invented so the Big Pharma companies can make more money. Children should never be given medication for those "diseases"
