I visit the gym 4 x a week and do kickboxing 3 x a week, and the other day I noticed that my kickboxing trainer has a lolly jar on her desk and straight after training she always has a few, I asked her why she does this and she said that she enjoys sweets, and if you have to have a sugar fix to do it within 30 mins after training,??she said something about the sugar not storing as fat like normal because it will be metabolised differently for a short period of time after exercising?? is this true?? can anyone please explain what she meant??? Thankyou!

what your traininer is doing is pretty much common practice in the fitness industry.

after exercise the muscles are primed for nutrient uptake. insulin sensitivity is greatly elevated and the number of glut 4 transporters have increased on the muscle cell so glucose uptake is enhanced as well. post workout is the absolute only time that carbohydrates of any form will not be converted to a lipid and stored as fats. carbohydrates after training serves the dual function of elevating insulin levels which activates various receptors sites on the muscle cell. this increases muscle protein synthesis and glucose uptake.

its true that for a short while after your workout you will metabolism any foods you eat faster (without the risk of storing them as fat) because you're body is a caloric deficit. however you really only have a short window of time to do this and this does not justify doing it everyday or binging on as much as you can stuff in your face for the 30min after workout. i personally would not recommend this no matter what she says. i think its more effective to set one meal aside per week where you have that chocolate bar you've been craving or peice of cake you've wanted and leave it at that. its much easier to avoid sugar cravings the less you indulge in it and you don't want to get into this habit only to see your results fly out the window. everyones body works just a little bit differently too so what works for her might not necessarily work for you.

Your trainer is right...the simple sugars that are in sweets are the first to be converted to energy - especially right after working out. Your body uses the sugars that are most readily available FIRST (in your blood/stomach/intestines/etc). Then, it goes after the stores of fats/sugars around your body to satisfy the remainder.

if you eat foods with added sugar, like candy, the sugar stores in your body as fat --- unless you eat the sugar within 30 minutes of your workout.

in my opinion, too much sugar in our body can also cause illness. So maybe let just minimize the intake of it. Good day!
