It depends on how he is going. Is he going as a gun carrying hunter, or is he just going along with Dad as an observer? If he's just observing, as soon as he is old enough to stay quiet when necessary, and obey everything his Dad says during the hunt, then he's old enough. My boy is progressing in those areas pretty well, so for him I'd say probably in about 2 more years, when he's 8. Now, if you're talking about him actually hunting, there is probably a legal age, and that is a minimum. If your son has not mastered gun and hunting safety, he needs to before he goes, regardless of his age.

if the dad is very experienced then as soon as the son is able to sight in a rifle that is strong enough to put down a bear he is ready. there really is no age that can determine ones skill set. time at the range is also very different than time on the mountain. my uncle(45) set out to hunt a bear and the bear ended up hunting him. it gave us quite a story and some good jerky, but he wasnt ready for what he set out on doing. like the other person suggested, start with game that wont hunt back for him to learn how to track, hide and shoot.

Every young man is different , They mature at different ages emotionally. I have two sons and each were "ready" at different ages. I think children should hunt small game for a time before graduating to deer and bear size game. This gives them the tools and the lessons of taking animals for food. It is an educational process of gun safety and accuracy along with a huge responsibility of game laws and management.
I have seen children take deer that were not ready emotionally and it was very traumatic for them. Their fathers weren't aware of their sons emotional age. They were shaking and crying uncontrollably, never to hunt again. He did not hunt small game with his Father prior to harvesting their first deer.

take your son for a walk in the woods and teach him everything you know. take him on multiple walks, actually. make sure that he respects the animals that he is hunting and respects the power of a loaded weapon in his hands. this is what my pap did with me and i don't mean to brag but i know what I'm doing in the woods.
i would say teach him at 9 or 10 and then let him take the hunters safety course at legal age. (its 12 here in PA)

I began at age 9. I had used a BB gun for over a year before I was allowed to own a cartridge gun. I proved I was responsible, safe and generally competent by that time.

make sure of his knowledge about gun safety, etc. know that he is mature enough and phisically capable of doing such an activity. if he hasnt taken a gun safety course, have him do that, and hunters education. hope he has fun when he goes.
