most payphones have there ringer turned off, disconnected, or no ringer at all... so while some of the payphones will just continue to ring and ring, untill someone picks up the phone in an attempt to make a call, others will do diffrent things....
some COCOTS (customer owned coin operated telephone or was it coin operated customer owned telephone... ) have a modem built into them, so that the owner can dial into the payphone with a terminal program to diagnose troubles, or determine if they should send someone to empty out the coin box....
other payphones may give you a recorded message "this phone does not accept incomming calls"
but on a very rare ocassion you may find a payphone that actuallay rings....
I knew of only 2 in brooklyn... one by the diner across the street from the home depot on cropsey, and one on flatbush ave near ave o... (these rang several years ago... i am sure by now they no longer ring back,...)

Where do you get the number for a pay phone in the first place? If it was ringing, he last thing that I would do is answer it (in all scary movies the person the answers the pay phone gets killed, so unless you want to get killed, don't answer a pay phone).

It would ring until someone answered it, some people walking by the pay phone may pick up. Unlikely the operator would intervene.

This is so funny! LOL!! Why would you call a pay phone?? I didn't think some cities still had pay phones. Where I'm from they're practically dinosaurs. Some pay phones don't take incoming calls any how, have fun!!!
