Hmm well goths don't necessarily hate god or jesus in fact I know quite a few who believe. Goths acctually came from the christian religion a long long time ago. I don't have the story on me but they weren't against god or jesus to begin with. It has been through time that the meaning and perception of goths have changed... not to say that there arn't different sects of goths. Try looking up the origins of it and not on wikipedia because its not a good source for gothic stuff ... if you can go to a university library you can go in and read the books they have lots on it.

Do you definitely know these Goths hated God, if not just know that just because you are Goth doesn't mean you hate God. The cross can represent more than one thing, the cross is not a symbol of Christianity. It can mean anything you want to. Go ask what it means to them. Goths are not weird they are just like everyone else.

The crucifix, or roman cross, is a religious symbol that far pre-dates Christ. Crucifixion was also a somewhat rare event, as most died at a stake, and not a crucifix. The Romans were Mithraites Religiously (Sun worshippers), and crucifixion had religious as well as punative implications, as the crucifix was already a religious symbol for them.

Christ stated "take up your cross and follow me", but he was not talking about any type of graven image, nor a Roman sacrificial torture object. He was talking about persecution, as we are to be willing to suffer persecution for him, just like he willingly suffered death for us.

Scripturally, there is no basis for "religious symbols", and I truly do not know the date of their adoption into worship of the Son of God. I do know that many Pagan religions have used the cross throughout written history though, and that the Goths, or the Druids, used them as well in their worship.

I hope this helps.

Most of the time the crosses are upside down. Oh and some goths are Christians. Quit generalizing.

Actually they don't all hate God and Jesus, some actually believe in God, just not practicing, many teen agers do it because they copy their idols (music or movies) and most don't even know what the symbols represent!

For the older ones who do, they wear it just as satanists do, to mock the cross and all it stands for... I just wonder, if some of them don't believe in God & Jesus, what are they then mocking?
It would be as if I wanted to mock E.T.

I always assumed it was just because it was a fashion statement....you know, like how Madonna wore crosses. But good question, I'd be glad to know if there was a reason beyond looks.
