They adopted a 5 years old dog, thinking she was a golden retriver, after it got home it threw up everywhere on the sofa, car, and carpet. She also was having seizures, we took her to the Vet, he gaved medication to my parents, the seizure stoped and but the vomiting continued, after two month, we really don't know what to make of it, we returned her to the shelter..
So in this case, do you think it was my parent's fault for adopting her, it's the shelter's fault doesn't give us the info?
Is this mal-breeding that was done by the breeder?

Actually that shelter we adopted from it's next to a University, they sells their uthanized cat to their medical facility. ( I knew this because I took some anatomy classes while I was in school)

not sure who's fault it is. maybe they should have seen a differ vet. maybe the shelter didn't have the problem with her. but me being me would have hard time giving up on a dog. and would seek more help if my vet was not fixing the problem.

and ya know who cares if they sale the dead cats? at least they have a purpose. and i'm sure the money goes to the ones who could get homes. many more cats can not be rehomed like dogs many are feral strays that are wild. and the med classes learn something then its good in the circle of life...unless the shelter is putting them down just for that reason....

I dont think that its anyones "fault" really.. unless the people at the shelter or your parents made the dog sick. It is wrong though.. First of all the people at the shelter should have told your parents about any health problems that the dog had, but in my opinion your parents were kind of wrong as well. I mean, they sound like good people, they went to the shelter and adopted a dog vs. going to a pet store or breeder and then on top of it they adopted an older dog vs. a puppy! They tried to work things out, they took the dog to the vet, got it meds and kept the dog for a few months! So, please dont take this as me saying that your parents are bad people or that they did anything wrong, but the way I see it is if you take on a pet, that pet is your responsibility for better and for worse! For example.. My husband and I own two American Pit Bull Terriers.. We have a 1 year 1 month old male named Brooklyn and a 5 month old female named Destiny.. The day we got Destiny we took her to the vet and come to find out if we didnt get her to the vet when we did she would have died! We had to pay over $1,500 in vet bills so she could live! I was up every 3 hours feeding her all day and all night for the first few weeks! It was alot of money and alot of work! Yes the people that we got her from should have told us she was sick, and yes we were very mad that they didnt let us know she was sick, but at the same time we got her knowing that she is a living thing and something like that could happen. It never once even crossed our minds to take her back. Going off on the people we got her from crossed my mind a few times.. lol! But we never thought about takeing her back. People know (or atleast should know) that dogs are expensive and alot of work. When you get a dog you have to be ready for whatever could happen. Having a dog is alot like haveing a child.. You wouldnt give your child up if they were sick so, why do it to a dog? But, again I am not saying that your parents are bad people or that they really even did anything wrong.. Its just my opinion that you should do whatever it takes for your dog and you shouldnt take it to a shelter (or back to where they came from) because someone didnt tell you they were sick to start with like they should have. Props to your parents for what they did do though! Adopting a dog is a wonderful thing and adopting an older dog is an awesome thing!!

Shelters do not have a history of most animals taken in, unless a owner release. Owners often lie about why they are turning in a animal. We have taken in 1000s with no clue as to health or temperament or prior abuse. As a rescue we get ours into the vet first thing. However, not all medical problems will show up right away. Extensive tests are expensive. Most shelters can provide only the most basic care, if any at all.

There are no right answers to this situation. Sorry. I applaud your folks for adopting, they could not know. And the shelter may have not known she was sick. The stress of being in a shelter and then moved again could have brought on a underlying problem.

This is why I won't deal with shelters I have seen and heard so many horror stories about dogs that have been adopted and really you were lucky I know of some that nearly killed other family members.
I don't really know who you can blame if the shelter didn't have the dog for long they may not know the problem also ex owners won't give all the information.
I know so many on here say the best is a shelter but I say no way will I ever adopt from a shelter and the one I live near doesn't use a vet, the dogs are not vaccinated, You have to pay for the animal to be fixed ( I do agree with this ) but they still charge $125 for adoption.

There is no way of knowing if the shelter knew about the seizures. They can start suddenly. Vomiting could have been from stress of the change in environment or change of food. Same for the seizures, stressful events can trigger them. Not everyone can manage a pet like this, so your parents shouldn't feel guilty, but there may not necessarily be anyone to blame here. There is really no way of knowing.
Seizures are very common in dogs. I don't know that bloodlines have much to do with it. There is no proof that seizures are genetic. I have seen epilepic dogs of all breeds, purebreds and mixes. Other brain disorders can also cause seizures.

If your parents are inexperienced pet owners, then maybe the dog didn't belong with you guys. Dogs from shelters are a bit more problematic than cats, especially if the dog was a stray. No one is at fault, because the shelter didn't do a thorough check-up, or they didn't notice the problem, and your parents just weren't prepared for this kind of dog. Know that your dog will probably be put to sleep. But thats probably in it's best interest because the poor dog seems extremely sick.

I hate to say it but your parents. Do you think that if you adopted a kid and the kid got sick and needed allot of medical attention that it would be ok to take her/him back? That's the way it should be with a dog. When you get a dog you should look at it like you will do what ever you can for it. If you cant provide for it then you shouldn't get it. How after being and loving and bonding with it for two months could you just give it back?
I also say the shelter should have informed you of any info that they had. They may not had any idea of this going on. If they did then I would say that they should be willing to help out with the vet bills.

They're your parents so you should respect their decision, even if it was misguided. Usually shelters allow you to take back dogs with health problems, so if you just got the dog then I say no because that is part of the routine. You can't always know that the dog is healthy just by looking at it for 30 minutes at a shelter. That's why shelters usually allow people to return their dogs if they have health problems.

if your parents did nothing further to help this dog beyond ONE vet visit - then they are very poor un-committed pet owners & really shouldn't have a dog.

the shelter most likely had no idea about any of it. the vomiting may have been from the food you were feeding her

what would they have done if they'd had the dog from a puppy & she developed these conditions.

how sad for the dog.

It could simply have been stress related and the vomitting may have be been related to the food you were feeding, I have one dog that vomits if he eats anything with corn in it , so when I go visiting I have to ask other people to make sure they do not have their dog food sitting out, to make sure he does not get into it.
