Air would take only a few miles out of a gallon, my mom has air she says its about 25 mpg with out air and 23 mpg with air, so a tank would save with no air about, 32 miles per fill up for 16 gal tank, about every 400 miles you would save apx. $3.84 so a trip to florida going avg. 1200 miles, would be a savings of $11.52 cents, the trip there... Not worth it to me, to be hot and muggy.... I would make sure you have a spare tire.. My friend got a blow out if Georga, and not many places in the hills as they say and it cost him $300 for 1 tire, and a hotel say... They wanna stick it to you travelers.. I drove many times from Michigan to Florida..... make sure everything is intop order, may even want to do a oil change and change the fuel filter. Some places down the way, have some bad gas.. Depending of the age of your car/truck, may have a check up on him.. Plus sometimes, going through the mountains, depending on the route, the air conditinoer puts strain on the motor, may want to turn it off, so the car does not over heat.... Good Luck!

It makes no difference at all .The additional drag caused by an open window cancels the out negative effects of using the AC.
You may want to consider using I- 78 E to I-81S and then connecting from that to whatever side of FL you need to get to.
On a NYC - MIA trip using I-81 will add about 150 miles onto the trip but will actually save you money in doing so bc
I -81 has no tolls, no big city trafffic to negotiate and slow you down and since it runs along the spine of the Appalaachoans it tends to be a lot cooler than the low-land I-95 route.

We got a very early a.m. start from New York, like 2 or 3 a.m. Driving with the windows open was bearable until 1 or 2 pm, and then we had to turn on the a/c until at least 4. Also, at night we thought we'd be able to cruise with the windows open, but OMG the BUGS!!! Gross!!! So it was closed window traveling at night in the south. We made short pit stops to pee, walk around the parking lot and grab a quick bite from food we packed. Fayetteville NC was our halfway point where we spent the night. Quite a few reasonable motels there. Oh, don't forget the sunscreen; I got a wicked burn on my arm right through the car window. Have a fun trip!

If you're on local roads, you'll be fine with the windows and sunroof open, but on the highway, you'll get more drag (and therefore suck up WAY more gas) with them down.

This is what I do, since I spend a lot of time on the highway: run your AC until the car gets cooled off, then turn it to your air blower (if you move your temp gage into the red, it'd be your heat, but if you leave it in the blue, you get cool air)

BTW - get your car checked out before you go - change the oil and check the tires especially. Those can have an impact on gas mileage!!!

I've made that drive many times from Jersey to St. Pete Fl. at that time of year. It's just plain hot and muggy. use the AC. you spend that much more for gas. Besides with the windows open it'll cause a drag on the car and use more gas

It depends on how you handle heat. Every time I visit Florida I like the air because it feels muggy to me and I normally go between Nov and Feb. My husband handles heat really well and keeps his windows down all the time. If possible, drive around now with your windows down and see how comfortable you are with the heat in NY and figure it would be warmer down in FL.

You're not going to save that much gas byu not using the AC. I did the trip a few years ago in August in a minivan with no ac. We were fine until we had to sit in traffic for 4 hours in Georgia. Use the ac if you need it.

If you are on the freeway at higher speeds you will actually get better gas mileage if you close all your windows and sunroof and set the a/c to where it cycles on and off. If you are driving in the city you will get better mileage with the windows down.
