my 3yr old horsefiel tortoise has a slightly dry carapace, i've been to the vet and he said she's healthy , a few people have said that i should rub olive oil into her shell, but i'm not sure thats the right thing to do wouldn't it burn the carapace when she's under her basking light?is there something else that would get rid of the dryness

'Dry shell' usually does not mean much by itself, except maybe the basking lights are a bit strong.

Look at the eyes- if they are sunken, or have tears or streaks near them, the tortoise is dehydrating. Many people keep their Russians too dry.

Aim for about 70% humidity, or at least a high-humidity hiding place per http://www.tortoisetrust.org or http://www.russiantortoise.org

A tortoise does not need to be wet all the time. Many tortoises spend their lives with dry carapaces. It's no big deal.

You would get more answers in the reptile section. You are in the cat area.

your vet is right, that's just somthing that happens when turtles get older, its like when a snake sheds its skin, your turtle is probably going to lose his top layer of scales.

Letting it swim or even run around in shallow waters could help.
