Basically like "scared," except you replace the "sc" with "m."

Just like it's spelled. The "d" should be pronounced very softly, and the final "e" is silent. In French as in most European languages, the initial "e" has the short e sound, not altered (as it is altered in English) by the following r, so if English is your only language, it'll sound somewhat like "mayrd," though turning the e into an ay is a bit too much.
Of historical note, this is also an important quote. Napoleon, on seein the old guard break at Waterloo, realized the battle was lost, and "merde" was his famous comment. It is rumored that when General McAuliffe considered his response to the German demand for his surrender at Bastogne in WW II, he had this in mind, though his famous reply, "Nuts!" is what was published.

The first "e" is pronounced like the "a" in the English "scared" and the last "e" is silent. The "r" is pronounced in the back of your throat, like all French "r"s, but people will still understand you if you can't do this.

"How to say it: You should already know how it's pronounced, but just in case: "mayrd." "
(My interpretation: same sound as in "mare" & "hare" )

That from a site called "Talk Dirty to Me"
