Why is this pup not with it's litter and mother? 3 weeks is way too young to be away. Your dog is going to have a LOAD of issues if it's seperated from the mom so early. She's not done her work yet....
I don't know what to say about training a 3 week old pup... that's the mom's job.
Edit to Add - yes, you should absolutely give the pup back to it's mother... and 8-12 weeks is adoptable. The mom dog has to teach these little ones the ropes before you take over.
Tell your friend to get ALL the littermates back for a little while.

3 weeks is pretty young for a pup to be taken from it's litter and mum. Keep the puppy in a kennel. Especially when you are not in the house. Dogs by nature (in the wild), will not poop or pee in the area where they live (den). He may be so young right now that the instinct may not be there as of yet. Start with newspaper, if you catch him going on the bed, quickly put him on the paper. The more you do this he will associate the paper with going poop. Then move the paper closer to the door each time and then move it outside. He will catch on soon enough that poop is to be done outside. He is so young right now, that he just needs alot of patience and time. Pups are usually taken from the litter about 8 - 10 weeks and can be trained by 4 or 5 months. Don't be afraid of kennel training. The pup should learn young that the kennel is his sanctuary. It's his space. And then when he is out of the kennel he is to respect your space. There are many sites online that you can refer to. Good luck and enjoy the little pooper. Dogs are such a joy to come home to after a hard days work.

Oh Jack what were you thinking your pup is way too young the dog should be taken back to it's mother.1 it can cause the dog serious harm internally eating or drinking food at that age, the pup needs it's mom's milk.
2. it will become physically sick when taken too young from the mother(hence the pooping every where).
3. Three a pup can start to be trained at 8 weeks old, p.s. a dogs first learning experience to poo comes from its mom when she goes-he goes.
4. then and only then can you start to train the dog take him outside when he starts to pee or poo right away keep him there till he finishes repeat until trained. p.s. think of your dog as a new born baby, it's the same thing he chooses when he needs to go and you have to take him when he is ready even if its 2:00a.m. in the morning a pup is a big responsibility.
on the good side of things getting a puppy when he is young helps the bond between you he will be very loyal to you and make a great companion. I had about seven dogs myself, know what i'm talking about.

Puppies shouldn't be taken away from its mother until it's at least 7-8 wks old. This puppy probably can't control itself yet. This puppy hasn't even begun to think about house training. No trainer will be able to get this puppy to be house broke until its old enough. If your friend will take it back and keep it for you until it's old enough that would be best. This puppy still needs its mother's milk also. Then when you do get it back at the right age. There are many ways to break a puppy. One is if you want to crate train, then you need to get a crate in the correct size for your puppy. Puppies will only use the bathroom so many times where they sleep b4 they get the picture and start learning to hold it. Or if you want to use puppy pads, which i never had good things come from this, but many others have, you can get them from your local pet store along with a spray to spray it with to draw the puppy to it to potty when it needs to go. Or you can do it the old fashion way and just rub its nose in it and then take it out until it learns to go to the door. But you should never let a new puppy on the furniture until you have it trained. Hope this helps.

3 weeks is WAY WAY too young for a puppy of ANY breed to be away from his mother and siblings. Whoever sold you that pup is a terrible person and you better take it back. A GOOD breeder will NEVER let the puppies go before the proper age, which is ideally nine weeks old. Eight weeks is the norm, but nine week is actually better.
3 weeks is incomprehensible and to give a puppy away at that age is illegal in most states!
Take that puppy back and report your "friend".
You can certainly find another Golden puppy from a reputable breeder who would never give one away at that age.
This is the reason your puppy is pooping everywhere. He has barely been in this world three weeks and only knows to poop everywhere at any time. You cannot blame him for this.
He ought to be back with his mother where he learns certain things that only the mother can teach him.
Once he is of proper age, nine weeks, then you can begin teaching him where to go potty.

Puppies take alot of naps, this is where you need to pay attention of your dog the most. Everytime that your dog wakes up from a nap TAKE IT OUT. Even if you just took him out. This is what worked for me, and I had a newborn baby in the house so I know that you will have time to take the puppy out. Some dogs use the puppy pads too. Mine didn't but you could try., put the pad by the door. That way you will know once it gets used to going to the door that the dog has to go. Get a kennel too. Put hin in it every night before you go to bed. Get one smaller than the dog because they won't mess in it if they have to be in that for a while. In the morning take him out they let him be around the house.

Your pup is WAY too young to be away from it's mother!!!! Expect a puppy this young to do this for a while. Get some milk replacer from the pet store and start watered quality puppy food in a week.

how did you get a 3 week old puppy? it still needs its mothers milk and is way to young to train. You could keep it contained in a large box with bedding and some newspaper in one side so that it can pee/poop there. Make sure to clean it up and when it makes a mess put its mess on the paper.
I am very concerned that someone gave away a 3 week old puppy but maybe I am misunderstanding.

Are you sure hes only 3 weeks old?????
3week old Golden Pups can barely stand never mind walk around and poop and pee ever where.
Sorry but I dont find any reason other than to tell you to bring this pup back to the people who gave it to you.
The dont have a clue what they are doing.
I'm not sure this question is even ligit!
NOTE: No pup should be pull away from it mother or littermates until 8 weeks old. Bottom line no exceptions!
3 week old Golden pups cant walk and run around. Your friend doesn't even know how old his pups are??? Bring this pup to a vet and have then tell you how old this pup is. Then you can better determine how to properly potty train him.
Tell your friend he's a dumb a*s and should never breed his Golden again.

that pup is to young to be away from its mother. 5 weeks is the min. 8-10 is best. and training a 3 week old...i guess would be the same as a normal pup but still i would be contacting who ever u got this pup from!
edit
YES tell ur friend to keep them for 3-4 more weeks! when pups are taken so young the have MANY behavior problems they need their littermates and mom to learn how to be a dog.
