I just noticed that my cat has what appears to be a large scratch on her cornea. The weird thing is that she is showing no signs of pain--not even squinting. She does get in pretty dramatic fights with my other cat at times, but they have been separated for several weeks now. What could this be? I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but she has unusually large round eyes (she's from Greece).

This may be a stupid answer, but are you sure it isn't a hair?

If the cornea really is scratched you need to get her to a vet. If it does not get seen she could become blind. The vet will probably do what's called a "third-eyelid flap". You may not know but cats actually have a third eyelid unlike humans. What the vet does is stitch this eyelid to the top lid to keep the eye closed and the cornea covered up. This protects the eye and allows it to utilise its own healing abilities much better. The eye is kept closed for about a week and the the vet will take the stitches out again (No its not permanent!)

Do the right thing and have her seen.

Gently close her lids together and see if the "scratch" moves--it could be a little mucus strand in her eye. Scratches on the cornea are very painful and they will usually squint or rub. If you're not sure, definitely needs a vet visit as ulcers can get bad very quickly, especially if she is rubbing at it. Putting off treatment could lead to eye loss--not worth it.

I to agree that your kitty needs to " see " the Vet. Your vet can do a eye stain that does not hurt the pet and have a good look into the problem, yes.. if you wait this out it could cause other problems with the eye in the future. Think of it this way, if it was your eye, what would you do? There are eye drops and ointment that can be used through your vet. I am a vet nurse and reading your question does make me want to have a look at your kitty's eye.

Take care....

If she is not squinting it may be a piece of hair stuck on the eye. Try wiping the closed eye with a wet washcloth and see if the "scratch" moves. If it does then its a hair and you should be able to get it out by rubbing gently with the washcloth over the closed eye. If it doesn't move she needs to see the vet as soon as possible.

She needs to see a vet. A scratched eye can lead to major infections and even blindness. This happened to ours.
