Me and my parents might be getting a dog soon. I would like to adopt a dog but we are also looking into buying one. I need a breed thats good with small animals and cats. And that has a good activity level. My dad suggested a norwegian(sp) elkhound. But I'm not sure.

Here is a page that rates dogs with respect to other animals.

The Norwegian Elkhound rates at the bottom.

I would reccomend a Border Collie. These dogs are very intelligent and obediant. They also have a high energy level and always want to play and work. They are farm dogs so they will most likely get along with any other pets you have.

A Corgi might be good for you too. These dogs aren't as energetic as a border colloe but they still like to play. They are also farm/ herding dogs so they will probably get along with other pets.

I can only say from experience, but Yorkies are a good breed if you like small, active dogs. They are really smart, don't shed and are good with people/kids/animals if trained from puppies. However, they are somewhat difficult to housebreak and need alot of attention.

If you want a nice, fun, and loving dog, get a west highland white terrier. They are always happy and they are basically nice to everyone. They are also excellent watch dogs. They'll let you know if anything is out of the ordinary.

I would suggest a Golden Retriever, they are good family dogs, nice and active, friendly, and they get along great with other pets. They are very easy to train and are willing to please. They are the 4th smartest dog...they love you no matter what. I have 2 and there's never a boring day!

If you want a nice, calm dog, you should look at adopting an older dog. But if you'd like a puppy, chihuahuas are very fun and active. Also, poodle/chihuahua crosses are simply ADORABLE! They don't get very big, either. German Shepherds are loyal and easy to train, but they can get quite big. It really depends on what size of dog you want!

one way to know is you can get books from a local library and you can get a book on types of dogs and how they act. you can then know what kind of dog you want.
