It would show an irregularity that would need further testing, like a biopsy, to find out what it is (cancer, cyst, benign lump, or just a dense area).

The purpose of the mammogram is to detect lumps that may be to small or to deep in the breast tissue to feel. They will usually need further work up to make sure they are not concer. 90%of breast biopys done are not cancer. There are several types of testing done, fine needle, or core biopsy where the Dr. follows the ultrasound machine and sticks the needle into the site obtaining a sample. Rarely do they just jump right in for a surgical biopsy.

It will show lumps and if they suspect it is more than just a fibroid tumor they will want to take a small biopsy to make sure it is not cancer. They do this for woman that are 45 and above just for protection and early intervention. The earlier they can catch a cancer the better. Brest cancer kills and if they don't catch it in time it can spread like wildfire. My Aunt just recently died from hers because she refused to have them done and when she finally decided it was too late. She had to go thru 3 rounds of chemo and it kept going away and coming back.

A mammogram shows up any abnormalities in the breast, in which case if there is, then further testing may be required.

Exactly as you said, it just shows that something isn't 'right' and they should run further tests.
