Look at how God made man:
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7
Man became a living soul, he was not given one. When man dies he goes back to the earth (ashes to ashes and dust to dust) and God's breath goes back to him (not an immortal soul).
The dead rest in their graves until the Second Coming of Christ.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people who have been laid in the grave. When Christ, who is our life, appears at His second coming, He will resurrect the righteous from their graves, and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous, will take place a thousand years later. (Eccl. 3:19-20; 9:5-6; Gen. 3:19; Rom. 6:23; 1 Tim. 6:15-16; Ps. 146:3-4; John 11:11-14; Col. 3:4; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; 1 Thess. 4:13-17; John 5:28, 29; Rev. 20:1-10.)

According to Genesis 2, you ARE a soul, you were not given a soul and God is the only one that has immortality which goes to show man does not have a soul that is immortal, that does not die, but it is a thing made up by the Catholic church in the 1500's to get more people to stay in the church by fear tactics. It is in the history books so you can see for yourself it is not my idea. By the way, the bible says the soul that sins, it shall die. So what does that do for the ones that say you have a soul that never dies? Goes just contrary to the bible facts. check out the bible quotes by going to the site below.

I think the soul will go on. If we are in Christ the soul will be with God, not necessarily in the heaven as it has been described by some people, but in a way that will be far more pleasant than this life.
If we aren't in Christ we would not have the eternal protection of the Lord, and I'm not sure exactly what that would mean. Punishment, perhaps. Form not exactly clear.
I believe heaven and hell as described are pleasant and unpleasant, but that these will be beyond human abilities to describe.
I am a Christian and thus believe I have been saved.

As a human being, you are the soul. You are talking about your spirit. The spirit will go to either heaven or hell at the judgment. That is the Great White Throne Judgment.
All the dead are asleep in the bosom of Abraham.
We do get new bodies when we rise from the grave.

When a righteous person dies, their soul is asleep (at rest-they know nothing), until they are resurrected when Christ returns.
When an UN-righteous person dies, they are kept in a prison of darkness and separation from God and all other beings, it is a spiritual prison. Suffering in loneliness with memories of denying Christ. Being alone and knowing that you refused the blood of Jesus.
They are kept in this prison (holding cell) until the time of judgement at which time they will be reunited with their human body and both body and soul will be destroyed in the lake of fire.

I believe that those whose sins aren't atoned for, their souls go where God puts them. A place of sleep or hell.
For those born spiritually, cleansed by His Blood, when they die, their soul/spirit goes to heaven to be with the Lord.
There are two resurrections. The first is when our soul/spirits put on an everlasting body. There is no threat of the second death or lake of fire for these. And rewards are given.
At the last resurrection. The dead from the sea, where dead are & the dead in death & hell, all stand before Almighty God. These are those who weren't part of the 1st resurrection. And they will be judged according to their works. And also those whose names aren't found in the book of life will be thrown into the lake of fire, the 2nd death.

I think that we are souls who are continually learning and evolving. Our bodies in this earthly existence are vehicles that are necessary to learn in this environment. They will eventually wear out and die, but the true essence of what we are does not die. We just move on to a different environment and continue our growth there.

Your soul goes into a long/or short (depends on when judgement day is) sleep-LIKE state, until the second coming. At that time, then, is when you go to either Heaven or hell.
