It would help to know what characteristics you like. Do you want a small, medium or larger dog and what will your life with the dog be like. Some breeds require more room to run and frequent walks while others are more milder in temperment. Do research on specifics to determine which breed is best for you. But remember all puppies are a handful. They get into lots of things, chew everything in sight and require a lot of work to train both behaviors and potty. I've always found that adopting a dog from the humane society or animal control is better. Mixed breeds typically are more layed back.

Check with the Canadian Kennel Club to find a good, reputable breeder who really cares about their dogs and wants you to get a good one. Pet shops usually sell poor quality puppy mill dogs and all they want is your money. Don't buy a puppy sight-unseen off the internet either; it's almost a guarantee that you'll get ripped off. Also, consider adopting a dog from your local shelter - you'll be saving a life!
