My 8 week old kitten had a prolapsed rectum, 3 days ago the vet put it back, and stitched him, to hold it in place, but still allow him to pass stool.
But it's been 3 days and he hasn't had a bowel movement.

Is that common?
Or is there something else wrong?

He's staying at the vets.

And he IS eating.

This is very normal. I'm a hog farmer and this happens all the time with sows. We just give them some mineral oil to help them pass their stool more easily.

First off, it is not " normal " and can not be compared to hogs. Sorry hun.

Your pet is fine, I have been a vet nurse for 20 years. I have see these cases before. Your vet is doing the right thing. It does take a few days for the colon and rectum to " wake up " per-say after having surgery. And think about this, if you just had something sewn there, would you want to pass anything through it? I should think not < grin > Give your vet and your kitten some time here, things will start moving soon.

Good luck to you and your kitty :-) I hope it all comes out well, no punt intended.....

Since he's staying at your vet's, the vet is the one I would go to if you have a question like this. Prolapsed anythings are bad. It's hard to say what is normal or abnormal in this case- I am not a vet and unless someone here is a vet that answer's this question- they really have no idea either as they have not spent 8yrs learning specifics of animals. So, Go Call Your VET!

I'm sure the vet will take out the sutures if he doesn't think the kitten can poop. If he's treating him for diarrhea, it may just have dried him up and he doesn't have a lot of stool to pass just yet.

Sometimes with these operations it takes a few days to get the bowels to start working again... good luck and my prayers are with you and your little kitten,.

What does your vet say? This is a question only your vet can answer.
