Hey. My dog smells really bad. Whenever I touch him my hands smell really bad. We just gave him a long bath and the smell returned. I have no idea what to do but I would like to touch my dog without getting an awful smell all over me. He is a Basset Hound. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change the dog food to a better brand. My mastiff had this odor that was like death coming out of her pores and breath. I switched her food to a better brand and the smell is long gone.

If you've used good dog shampoo & the smell is still bad, you should probably rule out any health issues. If all is well, try a shampoo made by Top Performance All Natural Green Tea & Mint. It's really good for their skin & coat. Some dogs will smell worse when it's hot out. The heat seems to stimulate their oil glands which can make them smell bad. If you can't find the shampoo locally, you can get it online at PetEdge.com. That's where I get most of my pet supplies.

Any hound will smell no matter how many baths you give it. I had one when I was a child and loved it so, but my parents made it stay outside due to the smell. I bathed it every other day and still...They have some decent dog perfume out, maybe check with a groomer for something to mask the smell.

Has your pet been outdoors unsupervised? Could it be possible he got sprayed by a skunk? If it's possible then bath him in tomato juice and allow him to soak in it for a while.

The research I found only mentions ears. This breed is prone to ear infections which can lead to a very fowl stench. I use to take care of one who got ear infections all the time but I don't recall ever having gotten smell on me just by touching his skin. Call the vet to see what he recommends.

hmmm it could be a number of things - when you said basset the first thing i think of is ears - the long heavy ears keep air from circulating and sometimes create some waxy build up with hopefully no yeast infections. it could also be his / her anal glands. which unless u dont mind sticking your finger up its butt - let the vet or groomer do it. if you live in an area where there is skunks - maybe he/she got skunked. also he/she could have a type of dermatitis that is inflamming the skin and releasing the stench. best bet would be to go to the DVM and let them check out your basset - Good Luck!!

Hounds do have an odor, but it shouldn't be that bad! Suspect a skin infection, seborrhea, or even an ear infection. Have it checked out by your vet. :)

Check our aromatic dog washes/soaps available in most pet Stores.

Keeping a dog clean is an endless chore.

Be careful, your dwelling will eventually smell like your dog if you aren't up to cleaning.
