Assuming you are flying domestic...if you are planning on carrying your infant on your lap you will not need a ticket. Most airlines allow a lap child per adult up to the age of two. If you have an older child under the age of two you are only allowed one lap child for yourself. See the attached link for policy on US Airways...other airlines have similar if not identical policies.
If you are on an international flight there will likely be some fee for the lap child between 10-25% of the ticket price, (varies by airline)...
Also as a parent of a toddler I suggest the bulkhead area if you are able to obtain it as the extra space for you and your infant makes a huge difference...

Call the airline directly. Often, they will let you book. One mother told me that she had to give them a name for an international flight and the couple changed their minds before the birth and they were charged a fee!
Make sure the baby will be old enough. Most airlines stipulate 2 weeks as the minimum age. Get your pediatrician's advice. S/he might want to step up the vaccine schedule.
Children are safer in a carseat than on your lap but flying itself is safe. If anything happens, s/he is not protected.
For more information on flying with children, check out an article a few years back which I've updated;

When traveling with a lap child you actually do not need to book/purchase a ticket. Do call the airline however and let them know that you are traveling with a baby because they will need to ensure that you are in a qualified seat for traveling with him/her...
Congrats! :0)

Frist until 2 yrs old on the lap, it 's a freeebie
Second, your question make not much sense....think about it.
IF you have to buy seat now, do you know the name, boy or girl??? Need a birth certificate, showing this is actually YOUR baby, not a someone else's.
Are you certain, and hopefully, no complication during delivery....don't laugh. Never know what can happened in hospital delivery room. Will he/she will be able to fly (health wise) Are you going to breastfeed him/her during the flight? assuming it is more than 2 hrs flight.
and so on. and so on.......

Do you think the infant would be able to handle the change in environment? Wait until it's older.

cute!
I'd say just tell them he's your carry on and like you said, keep him/her in your lap.
