The most important part of the Rh factor (also called Rhesus, since it was first isolated in Rhesus monkeys) is that you can't give it to negative people.

You probably know that there are A proteins and B proteins. If you have A, you are A. If you have B, you are B. If you have both, you are AB, and if you have neither, you are O. People with O can give to anyone but can only receive O blood. AB people can only give to AB people, but can receive any blood.

Rhesus factor works similarly. If you have it, you can receive blood that has it doesn't, but if you don't have it, you can't receive blood with it. O- people can't receive even O+ blood.

RH factor. It's either positive or negative. Aside from basic ABO blood groups, blood recipients should also be matched according to RH factor to prevent incompatibility issues.

Rh positive people have the Rh antigen on the surface of their blood cells. (It's called the "Rh" antigen because it was first identified in rhesus monkeys.) Rh negative people do NOT have this antigen on their blood cells.
