I've heard all about wrecks prior to airbags and how helpful they are supposed to be, but I've also heard how kids can be killed by them and all kinds of freak accidents involved and how they sometimes go off for no reason and cause and accident. So are they really more safe or unsafe?

Driver side airbags go off at 170 mph, passenger airbags go off at 240 mph. They sound like a gun going off. kids 12 years old and under should NOT be in the front seat. Their bones are just not strong enough to take that sort of impact. Smaller kids, (babies, preschoolers)..well, let's just say it is forceful enough to take a head off. THAT'S why manufacturers and safety advocates say no one 12 and under should ride in the front seat...period.

As for the pp, I have seen a fireman using the jaws trying to get a seriously injured person out of a car and the airbag went off. It injured the fireman and re-injured the passenger. Thankfully, everyone was okay, but the fireman couldn't hear for a couple of days.

Airbags are very affective, it's when the do not deploy there dangerous, I've seen accidents where airbags have not gone off and a firefighter or paramedic is trying to get a person out and BAM it goes off throwing the person back and causing serious injury

They are safe if you follow the rules and have them checked out after 10 years. Kids under a certain height / weight should not be in the front seat. I've never heard of them going off for no reason at all. I have heard of them NOT going off when they were supposed to. Generally, they are more safe than not. Otherwise they wouldn't be put into cars at all.

Small childrens' bodies are too small for their heads to be above an airbag if it's not above them. Adults, tweens and teens on the other hand can survive having an airbag explode in front of their faces. Without the airbags, you would die.
