If someone seems to instinctively understand the meaning of scripture, or have the ability to tell when something or someone is "not right" according to the Bible, even when they're not really sure how or why they know these things, would this be a spiritual gift, or just the Holy Spirit guiding that person? If it's a spiritual gift, what is the name of it?

Also, if you have this gift, when you were a babe growing closer to God, did it take a long time for you to feel less inclined to ask others for their opinion rather than just going to God in prayer for assurance?

The gift of discernment.

1 : the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure : skill in discerning
2 : an act of discerning
synonyms DISCERNMENT, DISCRIMINATION, PERCEPTION, PENETRATION, INSIGHT, ACUMEN mean a power to see what is not evident to the average mind. DISCERNMENT stresses accuracy (as in reading character or motives or appreciating art)

A spiritual gift is the Holy Spirit guiding, when it's obvious.
This would be characterized as a Gift of Knowledge.
It also helps if the person has read the Bible often.

A good understanding of right from wrong !! is a good or first start !! & to have a good, trusting spritual or Bible conductor of Biblical Facts!?! & I think the word you're looking for might be ENLIGHTENED!?! ... & I truly doubt you'll find many in this common era that would have a sorta sixth sense that the masses would except as being "TRUE"... BTW I think most that still talk in SOo,`called BIBLE-TALK ex: thus, thou, thee <-- as such ; Are only mixing some people up !! The Bible has been translated not only in different languages !! But also so the scriptures & or words can be better understood if you have a good bible conductor `'R"r.r`r,r','[..6..29..07..]

Good question! Rose............ You couldn't find 2 Peter 1:20-21 ? First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. It is the peculiar glory of the prophets that, supreme among human beings, they did not know what they were talking about. We’ve all had experiences of saying more than we realized. But nobody did this more than the prophets. The Spirit was speaking through them, readying both them and the world for a revelation which neither they, nor the world, could have anticipated. When it did come, even those who ate and drank with the Revelation and met Him on the Emmaus Road after His death and Resurrection still did not understand, any more than the prophets, what the words of the prophets had ultimately meant. The Revelation Himself, Crucified and Risen, had to open their eyes, in the breaking of the bread so that they could finally drink of the Holy Spirit, the “Spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).

This would be considered a sporotual gift and everyone should follow that person's teachings so they can know what to do when they ccome to something like that.
This is I would call a more distinct form of the Holy Spirit in oneself. The person could be considered a profit.

It is the job of the Holy Spirit to "lead us into all truth".
He also reveals scripture to us. That is not a "gift" per-se, but comes from a relationship with God.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are apostles; prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.

I would have to say not only a gift from God but intellectual ability as well. To be able to pick up anything not only the Bible quickly one has to have a keen mental acuity. God may have planted that seed but it is one that needs to be harvested with discussion and research. Just because one picks things up quickly and understands them does not mean they need to stop listening to other opinions. That is the only way to grow not only in faith but in intellectual capacity as well.
