And how much would it cost to transport your car and yourself on such a train, generally speaking?

yeah it's Amtrak's Auto Train service from I think Virginia to Florida but I would check Amtrak's site just to make sure as for the cost I have no idea but I would check on their site they should have the info you want
http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage
or you can call them at 1-800-USA-RAIL
Hope This Helped

Unfortunately, only the Virginia to Florida route is generally auto-carrying. And it IS expensive, I checked one time, about $900 for your car alone! Much cheaper to drive the 14 hours down to FL and back. But, if you can afford it, and can't drive, then it's probably worth the price.

Believe it or not,

Why train travel is inferior
* quality of trackage varies a lot ... think of driving over potholes ... because of this, some trains go pretty slow

Why train travel is better.
* train travel is almost as expensive as plane travel, and that's just you.
* no upper limit on luggage ... you can even use train to be like a U-haul of personal furniture in move across country

Why plane travel is inferior
* for reasons of security, extreme limitations on what we can carry on board
** have trouble swallowing? need some nourishment to consume when plane go up down ... sorry no can do, there is something bad a terrorist can do with throat losenges, soft drink, so no one may have one on board with them
* we are packed in like sardines
** don't have cold flu when leave? You will have it at destination ... catch anything fellow passengers have
** clothes in good repair when leave? Expect to have multiple tears by destination, due to catching on sharp corners of seats etc.

Why plane travel is better
* you get to your destination faster ... 2-3 hours in traffic jam to airport ... 2 hours going through security etc. ... 1 hour sitting in plane waiting for take-off ... you know the drill
* ground facilities at airport are vastly superior at airport ... good luck on seeing a taxi, let alone catching one, at train port

Why auto travel is better
* You have self-control go where, when, and can stop for as long as you like at rest stops,
* no limits on luggage
* you can be with family, friends, at their convenience,
* avoid traffic jam times
